RE: loss of taste/smell
You will absolutely know when it happens to you; this is not "I can't smell the chicken soup because my head is clogged," it's a "Holy shit why CAN'T I TASTE OR SMELL *ANYTHING*?!" Eating hot peppers and getting the heat, but no flavor.
Hell, I knew I was fucked because I had just returned from Gatlinburg (when I got to hit the range with our genial host), 8am, grabbed my Mt. Dew (I am not a coffee drinker) and it was flat as hell. I thought "That's odd," but we'd been gone for over a week so I thought maybe it had just gone bad. Went back upstairs, grabbed another, drank and said to myself "Weird, why can't I taste thi... SHIT SHIT SHIT!"
I have never had anything like that in my (at the time) 45 years, and it took MONTHS for me to be able to taste and smell again. I lost lots of weight because I eat for taste; you'd be amazed at how not hungry you get if you can't enjoy it.

We're fucked. There will be no happy ending here; there is no going back to 'normal.'. There are only bad outcomes and worse outcomes. And we don't get to choose those, either.
