The real problem is that Western politicians are cheap, and eager to sell out their countries for a pittance. In no small part because so many of them consider themselves 'citizens of the world' and couldn't care less what happens to the country they grew up in.
It's much cheaper to destroy a Western country by buying up its politicians than by fighting a war. Australia, for example, is now a sitting duck for Chinese occupation once the US is unable or unwilling to protect it any longer; lots of lovely resources, a minimal ability to fight off invasion, and a large Chinese population already there.
Oh, and Canada too, though I suspect the US will be more eager to try to prevent a Chinese colony right on their border.
