That just has to do with the textbook definition of "living". The common definition is that an entity has to have both a metabolism and the ability to reproduce on its own to be considered living. Viruses can't reproduce on their own, they need to hijack a living cell to do that. And both viruses and prions have no metabolism, they cannot absorb nutrients and create energy.
