I think we're past the point of arguing using facts. We must use emotions in this battle since this is all emotional to begin with. You cannot win an emotional war with facts.

If I was in that situation, I don't know exactly what I'd do, but it would probably be seen by many as cold and unfair, something that looks out for myself but inadvertently generates major emotional trauma in others. (Since that's what such a stupid/emotional decision inflicts upon rational actors.)
