A very liberal friend just hit me with an idea on how to let the free market handle this issue.
His idea is that you can discriminate any way you want to but, you have to own it. So, if you are going to discriminate for any reason, religious or not, you have to have a sign in the window of your business so that everyone can see what your policies are with respect to discrimination. That way, everyone has the same information and can make their own informed decision as to whether to do business with you or not.
My contribution to his idea is that if you don't discriminate then you simply have a sign with a $ on it signifying that if you have the cash you can most certainly buy it.
At first thought I like it. A very minimalist law that informs everyone as to what is going on so that they can then make an informed decision. I can imagine that it would replace a large number of not so minimalist laws.
Of course, this could be done without a law if you think it through...
