It's very interesting to go back to the federal register 1938-1939 timeeframe and read how SS was set up. Somehow they knew back then it would cease to turn a profit for gov't about 2010-2020 timeframe.
As i recall, when Bush did his required periodic presidential review of SS and honestly pointed out that it was bearing down on an iceberg and something needed to be done, the democrats excoriated him for scaremongering.
