How do you stop Zuckerpig's privacy invasions?

Boycott anyone who advertises on those sites -- do not buy and do not do business with in any other way.  How do you know they're advertising?  You see "Sponsored" or any sort of video ad from a given entity.

This post is exempt and will never go away.  I will add to it as I see new companies, and if you do and can confirm it to me I'll add them.  Here's my pledge: If I see an ad from your firm on any of Zuckerpig's properties or sufficient confirmation (e.g. seeing such an ad on someone else's device in the app) I will never buy anything from you.

You choose -- you advertise and pay that company to do so, you lose my business.  To get it back you must permanently pledge to never again advertise on any Facebook-owned property, in public, via a formal press release or other similarly-verifiable and public method.

Oh and you get one second chance, never more.

Advertising is legal.  So is refusing to do business with you because you are the primary and in fact nearly the sole source of funds for a company that does things I consider detestable.

So here is the start of it folks, and yes, it will grow.... check back often!

  • Best Buy (Oh well; I've bought plenty there)
  • REI (this one hurts; I like them.... but no more!)
  • Big Green Egg (Sorry *******s, I was interested but NOT NOW!)
  • Southwest Airlines (all airlines SUCK, but now these ****ers are on my blackball list)
  • Consumer Reports
  • Inked Magazine
  • Runner's World (oh well!)
  • 30A clothing company (oops -- that one's local)
  • The Heritage Foundation (oops again!)
  • Huffington Post (no loss there)
  • A&E TV
  • We Are The Mighty (Military-oriented news org)
  • Orbitz
  • LinkedIN (be a paying customer and you're blackballed - as employer or employee!)

  • Pensacola Runners Association (ouch; they sponsor races I'd run in...)
  • National Geographic (oh well)
  • CNet (Bleh)
  • 22 Words (Clickbait garbage, but heh)
  • Theclymb.com
  • Active.com (oops again; and I have bought quite a lot from gearup...)
  • 12 Tomatoes
  • The Penny Hoarder (yeah, another clickbait garbage site, but..)
  • SoWal (oops -- bye-bye Walton County beach businesses..)
  • Innermost House (San Fran Non-profit... good for some west coasters)
  • NTD Television
  • The New York Times (shock - NOT!)

Runner's World is no loss. It is a shambling zombie shell of what it used to be. Now it's half of a vegetarian apologetic, and half of a shoe company shill rag. I need to bite the bullet and 'cut the cord'. Even on the cheapest DirecTv package A&E is available so they are getting a cut.

Dropped Consumer Reports several months ago. They seem to be one of an increasing number of publications that sign you up in perpetuity unless you contact them to cancel. Now I have another reason to ignore their renewal notices.

Argh! Thanks for letting me know about REI. I was just about to go shopping there. I need a well-framed backpacker pack, around 70L for an itty bitty person and a 15 degree F or better light sleeping bag. Any ideas where I should be looking?

Hstella.. Unsure if this fits in the list, but maybe cabelas?

Also Jax locally has an REI like selection of packs. They also have fun army surplus vehicles.

There are plenty of places that sell both. I have a Granite Gear pack, but it's not suitable for what you're talking about (it's an ultra-light), which I got directly. As for packs in the 70L range there are a whole bunch of options (e.g. Osprey, etc) out there. The thing with packs is that fit is everything, and nobody is the same. Bags are easier and if you're talking small person then it's even easier because you don't have the long/regular issue to contend with (many sacks just plain suck for taller and/or bigger people!) Be aware that light and reasonably-cold rated bags (e.g. Western Mountaineering) are frightfully expensive.

Backcountry Outfitters perhaps?

These are the ones in the newsfeed..... they're "stories", ostensibly, but ones they paid to "promote."

So not really.

The only way to stop it is to make them unprofitable DIRECTLY so they won't pay.

I don't do business with any of the named companies, so nothing to boycott (yet!). I promise that if the names of any companies I actually transact with come up on this list - and I'll keep checking - I will boycott immediately. I'm sick and tired of Zukerburglar and Bozos [sic] getting away with destroying the country. They have to be stopped, and I'll do my part even if I'm just one person!

dropped consumer reports in the early 1990's when they started pushing socialism, the first attempt at health care reform, got very environmental left wing with the anti-personal car sentiment. I wrote them a letter cancelling with something to the effect that since they believed that socialism and free this and that was the better option, I would not support their selling of their rating services and use their work for free at the public library in a manner consistent with their values.

Just reading "Chaos Monkey's" about an advertising guy who got acquired into Facebook.

Its like a tell all of FB's complete inability to meaningfully target ads. Like at all. No matter what they try.

The type of information they have is near useless and barely better than billboards. Interesting for an engineer to actually explain the conceptual problems they face.

Seems like they would be better off charging an ad free subscription fee if advertisers knew how useless FB is.

REI.. ouch.

@Hstella, I'd do a yelp search on backpacking gear in your area.

Here in So Cal there's a great little local chain called Adventure16 that more specifically caters to backpackers, climbers, and fishermen. Given that you're in Colorado, I'd think you'd have a ton of alternatives.

Cabelas carries a lot of gear, last time I walked through there they had some decent backpacking-weight sleeping bags, but I wasn't very impressed with their selection of through hiking backpacks. Seemed to be more of a focus on car camping and day hiking rather than pure trekking.

For the sleeping bag in particular, if you know your height (obviously) and have a vendor in mind, you could just order directly from them online.

Nat Geo has been a mouthpiece of the Communists for a couple decades now, so I haven't subscribed to anything of theirs for a long time. It's unfortunate, because they used to have such excellent journalism.

A&E and NatGeo indirectly through my cable package. Canceled my long time NatGeo magazine subscription after their big issue on gender and gender identification last year.

Used to visit REI maybe once a year - not a big deal but now Gander Mountain is going out of business. Hopefully Cabelas (now Bass Pro Shop) doesn't show up on the list.

As noted in another post I wrote, you can add B&H Photo to this list. Very heavy Facebook and Google advertisers.

Interesting. I don't know if anyone who reads this site is a serious photographer, but it's pretty tough to avoid B&H if you are.

I can't buy everything I want at Leica Store Miami.(*)

However great their service is :).

(*) Leica Store Miami sells mainly Leica equipment and related accessories. Some people might say that Leica cameras are just a shade expensive.

**** -- I have a ****load of B&H-purchased photography and audio gear, and yes, I'm heavily into both. Never seen one of their ads on Facefart..... I wonder why considering how often I've bought there yet they've never managed to connect me?

I'll go look -- I have to see evidence before adding to the list, but that's beyond disappointing..... so off I go to see what I can find out.

(There are several other choices for both photo and audio gear, thankfully.)

I don't use facebook and the only site on the internet that I don't block ads on is this one. The google ads here seem... disjointed. Almost like it's random. The current page is some college.

I don't really understand why I'm not targeted better, I search for **** on google all the time. Amazon too.

Because for THAT purpose it really doesn't work all that well.

Where it works REALLY well, however, is when you have plenty of time -- like when it's your car insurance company.
