They did. The first paper on this was out in September. Maybe a bit slow on the uptake, but do remember that it took a while to characterize exactly what sort of odd shit was going on with this virus, and then someone had to go get the money to study that, and start breaking it down. Meanwhile we just took China's word for it that the spike protein was "harmless" standing alone and thus a good vaccine candidate, since it couldn't replicate. As it turns out while it can't replicate it doesn't matter since it appears it's basically the entire reason that when a Covid-19 infection goes systemic on you the result is a buttfucking instead of a mild flu.
