I wrote software for the surgery center sphere of the medical industry for almost a decade, and now I write software in the clinical trials area. I can tell you that they can absolutely deidentify the data. I worked for a company that wanted to do anonymous surveys,only behind the scenes they wanted to allow the surgery center to see the patient name. I flat out refused to write the software and had several heated arguments about it with the owners until they gave in. I did have leverage in that I was the single point of knowledge of the systems; had I not been, I would have been fired, probably on the spot. |
Long story short: if they say they can't deidentify the data, it's not because they can't, it's because they don't want to.
