The Dallas officer who claimed "honest mistake" in going into the wrong apartment, finding a man there (it was his apartment) and killing him has been convicted of murder.

Amber Guyger, the white Dallas cop who shot black neighbor Botham Jean when she mistook his apartment for hers, on Tuesday was found guilty of murder.

She faces a maximum of life in prison.

The dead man was unarmed (not that it matters in this instance) sitting in his own place eating a bowl of ice cream.

Incidentally the difference between manslaughter and murder is intent.  If you recklessly kill someone that is manslaughter.  If you intend to kill or seriously injure (or kill during commission of another felony) then generally, in most states, it's murder.

The jury found that she intended to shoot the victim; she did not negligently shoot him, she meant to shoot him and by definition shooting at someone reaches the threshold of intending great harm or death.  That's the distinction and it's what the jury found.

Sentencing should be interesting.  In Texas the sentence can be as little as 5 or as many as 99 years, and the circumstances will dictate that.  Keep your eye on the sentencing hearing, in other words.

It's about damn time and I hope she serves the rest of her natural life in the slam-slam.
