Squats, deadlifts, and presses strengthen functional movementsgetting up, walking, standing, bending over, reachingthat we all rely on every day and that can be challenging for deconditioned elderly people.

Deadlifts and squats develop incredible strength and this point about it being "every day" functional movements is very true. If I could only do one strength exercise it would be deadlifts (mainly because I hate squats).

For anyone who wants to do bench presses without a spotter, just don't use clips on the bar. If you're on the losing end of a battle with gravity, tip the bar to one side and the weights will fall off of that side, causing the counterweight to pivot the bar violently to the other side and off of you. No need to kill yourself to avoid damaging drywall or something.
