I have relatives who live in northern California. PG&E will regularly cut power in some areas where proper fire suppression has not been done and when the winds are high. My relatives have a very large propane tank and a whole-house generator, and they need to use it rather frequently. Of course, most people can't mitigate their risk in this way as it's expensive. PG&E needs to remove the fuel beneath their power lines, but the state won't let them.
I live in an area that had not seen the effects of major storms for decades, and then in the last three years, there have been 5 hurricanes/tropical storms that have impacted life here. Yet I still see new construction that is not concrete block with hurricane windows and sliders. Some is going on in areas that are not X coverage (AE for example).
I find it interesting that DeSantis was blamed for the hurricane intensity because he is a climate denier. Is Newsom being blamed for the fires? The politicians who won't permit controlled burns and make sure that there are sufficient water resources to handle a major fire will gladly waste money on DEI programs and high speed rail and other boondoggles. Fires of the magnitude we are seeing today may not occur for decades, and a politician's term may only last a few years. They may never see the consequences of their poor stewardship.
