Some countries require a civil license, which means you are legally married, and then the church/synagogue/mosque performs a ceremony, in which you are religiously married.

Had a conversation with our pastor about this. He liked the idea (of not doing the religious ceremony as a legal state marriage) enough that he is "going to talk to the lawyers about it."

Why? Because every religious house of worship of any size is required to be a corporation in the US. There are some smaller house churches, but if the local officials or neighbors figure that out, you will be served a violation (often for zoning).

I am not sure on our corporate bylaws, or if the synod has a hard and fast rule, but it is interesting.

I think that ended around WWI, when the various government agencies would send officers to approve Lutheran and some Catholic sermons in the name of national security.

There was a guy in my syond who was all for my denomination dumping that corporate status. He had a legal way of doing it, but the penalties were rather severe. When you are trying to meet budget numbers, at 60% or more cut off the top of the offerings going to pay taxes and fines add up quick.

Same with the various ESA's. Once you take the first .gov coin, they own you.

The tax exemption rules are pretty clear. You cannot advocate for or against a candidate; direct political activity is forbidden for all tax exempts.

But you CAN advocate against abortion, for example, AS AN ISSUE. You just can use a candidate's or political party's name. Yeah, I know.... and yeah, they might try to fuck with you, but the lines are pretty clear.

Saying "we won't do this" in the context of a sacrament is on extremely firm 1st Amendment ground.

Well, not THAT true @Redjack; it has always been true generally for most 501(c) classifications, its just that the IRS was extremely wary about going after religious organizations for what should be fairly obvious First Amendment reasons.

It has NEVER been illegal for a 501c(3) (the MOST restrictive, I'd argue, in virtually all respects) to operate as a charity aligned with a particular set of values or beliefs.
