This is the sort of nonsense that has zero balance and is fact full of falsehood; in other words an opinion piece masquerading as "news":

Tennessee’s law is one of the strictest in the country. It makes performing an abortion a Class C felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison. There are no exceptions. This is the part that Akers has since found herself having to repeat, often eliciting raised eyebrows and deeply drawn breaths: Unlike many states’ abortions bans, including the one in Texas, this law does not explicitly exempt abortions performed to save a mother’s life.

Instead, it offers doctors an “affirmative defense.” The difference is linguistically subtle but extraordinarily meaningful in criminal law, Akers says. The law makes performing all abortions illegal. And instead of the state having to prove that the procedure was not medically necessary, the law shifts the burden to the doctor to convince a court that it was.

Yeah, which came about because "health" got twisted into knots to the point that having morning sickness was considered "lack of health."

In other words the presumption was shifted to put the decision into the hands of a judge and (potentially) a jury because the left went the other way to the point that outrageous falsehoods were run on the other side.

That's how the pendulum works in the US and its what the left deserves for what they did over the previous 30+ years, including in Casey.

There is in fact no chance that a doctor will be successfully prosecuted for removing an ectopic pregnancy, although this nutjob claims otherwise in that opinion piece.  Absolute zero risk of such a prosecution exists; such a pregnancy is never viable, it can never result in a live birth and will almost-always kill the mother if not terminated.

Do I like the Tennessee law, living here and having read the entire thing?  No.  But I understand how it got passed and why it was proposed in the first place.  It was specifically because nutjobs argued that it was perfectly acceptable to stick what amounted to a pair of scissors into the neck of a half-born child and kill it, calling that "abortion" and a civil right.

Newton's Third Law applies to politics.  For every action there is an equal an opposite reaction.  If the crazies on the left hadn't pushed the above crap the Tennessee law would have never been proposed, say much less passed.

I remind you that Roe, flawed thought it was, never provided for abortion on demand through the first breath of the newborn child.  Indeed Roe's trimester "test" established that the presumption was that the State had a valid argument in prohibiting third-trimester abortions, with few exceptions.  The problem is that the left refused to accept that.

Time and medical science have moved on since the 1960s.  Today there is little to zero excuse for someone who wants an abortion to not produce one via medication and thus absent a serious medical complication (e.g. an ectopic pregnancy) that demands the mother's life be saved there are few if any instances in which a woman cannot procure an abortion on her own with two pills.  Unfortunately what has also happened is that at the same time the left has been screaming about "abortion rights!" it has sucked off the medical and pharmaceutical businesses and allowed them to price said drugs at exorbitant mark-ups; a literal five dollars worth of medication is marked up by 100x or more so it is essentially the same price as surgery.

If the left gave a wet crap about women in general instead of seeing them as a walking ATM machine in the form of a uterus to be enslaved by the medical industry and pandered to unholy Hell would have been raised two decades ago and those two pills would be available over the counter at every pharmacy in the United States for under $10.  The only valid question is "when was your last period?" and if you miss by more than a few days you spend the dollar on the test and, if pregnant and you don't want to be, ten bucks it is.

Note that this is perfectly legal in the US as of 2021 and thus in fact the pills are available over the counter:

On December 16, 2021, the FDA removed the in-person dispensing requirement for mifepristone and expanded the distribution to certified pharmacies in addition to certified clinicians.

But the price issue remains -- and it remains precisely because the Left doesn't want the problem solved; it wants a political wedge issue and is willing to injure or even kill women to have it.

There is zero issue with abortion access anywhere in the United States irrespective of state laws as exactly zero people know if you gobbled two pills.

But to admit this and solve the price problem means that the issue disappears as the means to score political points and profit from it, even though when you get down to it what's being sold in order to make said profits is the health and life of women, and it is specifically the left -- that is, the screaming harpies and Democrats generally -- that are doing it.

Karl, your arguments make sense, here and previously. One small thing has me wondering. Is mifepristone the optimal method of inducing abortion, or is it still necessary to keep the procedural options available. From what is reported to me by people with no agenda, the mifepristone method does not work properly enough times to matter and leaves the woman in a situation of bearing the process outside of medical care. We have to remember that a natural miscarriage is often followed up with immediate medical care, evaluation and often a necessary procedure to ensure good outcomes.

The real problem with the entire debate is that the constant process of improvements in anything medical, here a pharmaceutical option for abortion, is held back by these and overall related politics in the industry and society.

Socialism tends to do that with medicine. People always focus on the good points of which there are some, however its most horrible flaw is that it locks medical standards in place well past their expiration. The good stays, of course, however even good gets old. The bad is merely a travesty.

We have always had in the post war era a screwed-up form of socialism hiding under various supposed market entities. In urban areas even earlier in the public health services for their underclass.

The real debate, outside of the front cover, over Roe was making it a public benefit. The left has used abortion and in general women as a door to socialized medicine due to their feeling of personal insecurity. They do not really care about abortion. They care about centralization under a Federal model as it is easier to take over one thing as opposed to fifty.

For the left, innovation be damned.

Exactly right. They want it as a wedge issue and an election issue. Almost every ad here in AZ on TV that the Dims are using has the abortion issue in it. Some woman is on the ad talking about how "that R candidate is trying to take over my body and tell me what to do with my body". It's the only thing they have. The problem is it's working. The last I heard the astroNUT Kelly is ahead in the polls. The USSC decision was some bad timing. The Dims should be destroyed in Nov, but I don't think the Red wave is going to happen.

Anyone who can't see why taking 2 pills is an inferior solution, forgets that the fetus is lost to the medical industry and cannot then be used for organ harvesting, experimentation, stem cells, and other substances that the geriatric uber-rich depend on to live to age 95+ in good health. It comes down to money and power.

This is also why partial-birth and late-term abortions have become options in recent years. There is more material available to use with a larger fetus or actual newborn, and more money to be made.

Any woman whose life is in danger, has been raped, or otherwise does not care to carry the child to term, can make that decision during the first trimester, can she not? But the tiny embryo/fetus will not yield the desired organs or other materials to be harvested, nor the money expected.

This may be one reason why our hospitals, medical personnel, labs and insurance companies are currently so compromised and downright evil.

@Disgusted -- This.

But it's both "sides". That's why over the past 20 years the Republican Party had no significant progress in any of its main party planks: from abortion to gun-control, from responsible-spending to government-accountability, it's all about 'shouting' (e.g.) "Obama/Schumer/Pelosi are going to take your guns! Send us money!" instead of, you know, repealing the GCA & NFA.

Long ago someone asked me, "why should we care if godless liberals want to murder their own offspring?" The murder of an innocent is a pretty good reason to care, but I could also see his point. As this political wedge issue has dragged on over the years I keep thinking about that question. Why should I care?

Then along comes covid, and the very people most stridently pushing abortion as a personal right to privacy and choice are telling me to wear a mask and get a shot or lose my job. Again I have to ask, why should I care if they want to kill their own children? They wanted me and my kids dead. Why not return the favor?

For some reason I still do. I can't seem to help it, but maybe like so many other things I need to start caring a lot less. It's been clear for decades that politicians have no interest in actually fixing the issue. It's too good for fundraising. Relying on doctors to make ethical choices when it comes to life, health, safety of the mother, and safety of an unborn child is equally ludicrous. This is the same profession that just spent two years lining their pockets by shoving tubes down throats and needles into arms while refusing to offer reasonable and affordable treatments.

Maybe the right move for people who can't quite stop caring is to purchase some ads (preaching if you will) pointing out that murdering your child is a bad idea. Then pump all the rest of the money that has been donated to politicians and pro life groups into pregnancy centers and homes for unwed mothers. Stop trying to make a godless government force godless people to make good choices. Instead, speak the truth, help the people who make the right decision, and leave the rest to live with the worldly and otherworldly consequences of their "choice."

Motorrelay, that is an awful but probably accurate assessment, the greed factor is a huge underlying driver. I never considered the, "more yield/pregnancy" aspect.

I was horrified when the pols (including Northam) in Virginia were making the public case for post birth abortion.

Monstrous notion.

The left has used this issue to screw with the courts for 50 years, like abortion might be the only right that counts. Kind of amazing the abortion backers on the court fall on the side of administrative power without authorization, lockdowns, forced jabs and masks and any other NAZI policy a leftist government might roll out. Pray for the 4 solid conservatives in the court. Biden packs, it is time fight or leave. Contrary to the lying bastard in the White House, the radicals and thugs are on his side.

The people should have a right to define life, in this issue. The future generation is essential to the survival of the race. After jabbing millions of youth, potentially affecting future birth rates, the entire social structure is at risk. Birth control, and simply keeping ones pants on is a solution to pregnancy. They always bring up rape. But it is my understanding most rapists do not reach climax, making pregnancy a long shot. Of course the problem is throwing you clothes on the floor and jumping in the rack isn't always thought out.

Little is thought on the male side, where a woman can jump in the rack, get pregnant and then have the courts force a man to pay support for 18 years or more, under threat of jail and having any state license removed. I have a late friend who took his kid at 7 years old, because his ex couldn't handle the kid. 7 years later he was hauled into court and due to some circumstances I won't go into, ennded up in Dallas County jail for around a year, getting out to work off his pennance. Afterwards, the judge deemed him clear. Several years later the authorities decided he owed interest, which he couldn't pay and they took his drivers license, which was necessary for him to make a living.

What happens when the offspring decide they don't want to take care of Mom or Dad. It is quite possible, in this time of useless eater eugenics and the suppression of energy and food production, it is quite possible the State issues its own over 65 abortion policy. No it doesn't stop at 3 months or any other age.

As long as States don't outlaw that pill, abortion doesn't matter. There has to be some personal responsibility somewhere. 3 missed periods is roughly 10 weeks. A quarter year is 13 weeks. Planned Parenthood is trained to make the baby a thing. I know this because I knew a female customer of theirs who went from calling it a baby to a thing. They are a barbaric industry and if we want a barbaric society, roll on. It is pretty clear many supporters are barbarians.

A large part of our welfare system is set up to support single mothers. The last thing they need is more money to support their poor decisions. There is no accountability for bad decisions anymore.

You've written about the "corner cases" before and I agree. There is reasonable middle ground to be had, but both corners want no part of it, so the political pendulum is going to swing as it always does. I refuse to lose any sleep over it.

Mannfm11. I also paid off arrears ( to the state of Oklahoma) of about 13 grand. No problem. She is my child, and I had no issue accepting that part. Fine. I paid. 3 years AFTER I paid it, I get slammed with a 4 grand bill for interest. Fuckers. And back to the point of this ticker, its all a fucking game to divide the people, and of course the gruesome aspect of money for more and bigger body parts. Bring the asteroid.

The retards on both sides have been emboldened for decades by cunning politicians who spend trillions we do not have while peddling false promises of change and hollow rhetoric. Until DC is rid of the two parties who have created the mess we see today, expect more of the same until no more blood can be squeezed from the stone and chaos ensues. When hell is unleashed it will be far more likely that the retards will kill each other (their political rivals) rather than kill those you fucked them over for decades (aka the people they voted for).

Anyone notice that the right and the left have the same talking points recently? "Rule of law." "Caused the issues we see today." "Corrupt." "Threat to the nation." "Unfit for office." They don't even have to try to mix it up anymore...

Democratic advert still on the drawing board

"As a man who might one day become pregnant I believe in the sanctity of bodily autonomy. No government agency has the right to tell me what to do with my body when it comes to taking something out of it, like an unwanted pregnancy.

However, the government may correctly be said to have the obligation to tell me what to put into, not put into, my bodyt among an officially approved list not exclusively including other people's bodily appendages or various substances be they solid, liquid, gaseous, electronic, or derived from technologies not yet publicaly disclosed, apparent or approved.

Support of these principles is the foundation of our Democratic platform."

It isnt just a US problem with the medical industry making money off unwanted pregnancies. About 20 years back I read about abortion in Japan. It was very common there as the medical industry intentionally blocked the distribution of the contraceptive Pill. Then the woman would have to pay to have an abortion (and frequently many over her lifetime). The article gave the example of an abortionist doctor who lived a very comfortable life going to classical concerts and whatnot in Japan and overseas. How many babies did he kill to get nice tickets to Carnegie Hall?
