I'll add to what Karl said above about standby generators. When we moved ~6 years ago, the first thing I had installed was a 22Kw standby Generac fed by a 500 gallon propane pig. Install included an automatic transfer switch. At the time it was the biggest air-cooled unit they made. I believe they have one a bit bigger now. The engineer/sales guy that designed the install said right away that this was NOT a setup for off-grid EOTWAWKI system, which I totally concurred, since if I wanted that I'd be looking at a bigger, beefier, liquid cooled diesel fired solution. I don't have that kind of acreage to cover that kind of noise. This one is meant to keep us out of a hotel or worse if a freak ice storm or tornadic activity takes down the electric delivery system for a few days. We haven't had anything that big (yet) but it has served us well the times it has been needed. I should probably have a whole-house surge protector, but that will have to be later this year. Right now a collection of UPS/surge suppressors are doing yeoman's work until that can be done. This setup is not perfect, but a damn site more than most of the poor saps up in the Columbus area had last week.

Note that in an EOTWAWKI situation you're fucked when you run out of fuel, and you will, never mind that every asshole within a mile will know you have one running. Yeah, you can mitigate that (with plenty of thought and planning up front) BUT if you have anything ELSE running that makes light or noise (e.g. A/C or heat pump condenser, or lights after the sun starts to go down) you're busted anyway in that regard.

Storm damage and similar, sure. "Aw shit, the boog is on!" sort of things? If it starts every asshole without that happens to be within a mile will be headed straight for it and you had better be able to kill them ALL (this, by the way, is not easy when they come in size and/or from multiple directions at once!)

In a boog situation, "every asshole" will include your local warlords, better known now as the po-po. The ones that don't bail to safer pastures will be the ones grabbing all the battle rattle, BearCats and assorted party favors generously supplied by our betters in DeeCee. Getting harder to find counties that don't have outfits equipped like that. Suburban towns like Grove City, Ohio having a SWAT team is a solution in search of a problem.

Off topic - sorry KD - but how many times in the last several years have you warned about this exact situation?

Renewables as supplemental - great.
Otherwise you can change one side of the equation ... either less consumption (less people and decrease standard of living) or increase petro/nuclear.
Pretty simple unless you get political.

You, my soiled friends, will shiver in the dead if winter, sweat your balls off in the unrelenting heat of summer, and accept that your little boy thinks he's a girl and wants to cut off his testicles.

And very soon, if you object to ANY of it, you will find your guaranteed social income cut out until you make a very humble and public apology.

That's the plan.

I have thought for some time now that this is actually their end game. Oil is being reserved for a certain privileged few but not for the goyem.

I for one can't wait to start being paid a real saving rate of interest on saving accounts. Three dollars per month per 100k is criminal. CD accounts should start making retirement look pretty good, pretty soon. For the 99% of us, wealth is built only when we are paid for our capital. I'm sick and tired of that capital being used for free. Threives.

I'm sure your post was partial /sarc, but rates have been going up nicely over the past few months.

I know it's nothing compared to the ~5% I was getting around 2000-2001 at my ING savings account, but at Marcus, I'm currently getting 1% (and 2.85 on my CD's from '19). Their 5 year CD's are back up to 2.9% now.

Marcus has a referral programs that gives both the referrer and the new account a .5% bump for a few months. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the others on that doctorofcredit list do as well.
