Common Sense

"It's time for common sense gun control" - Any politician, anywhere, every time.

Is that so?  We now think that law should be applied to what someone -- anyone or some group of people -- call "common sense."

Perhaps you'd like to square this with a few other common sense facts.

First, all manner of things related to sex.

It is common sense that one's sex is determined at conception and at any time beyond that point is immutable.  One either has "XY" or "XX" sex chromosomes and in a very, very small percentage of cases has a disorder in that you have some other combination (e.g. XXY, etc.)  Therefore there are exactly two sexes and any attempt to claim otherwise, especially when it produces an obligation of others, ought to be prohibited by law -- right?

It is common sense that the act of sexual intercourse is dangerous.  It can result in very bad consequences, up to and including diseases that cannot be successfully eliminated from one's person and even death.  While one can take mitigating measures it is not possible to remove this risk entirely except by never having sex with any other person or thing.  This is even true for two virgins; pregnancy can and does sometimes kill when it goes wrong.

It is also common sense that only heterosexual penile/vaginal sexual intercourse can produce a child.  All other forms of sex cannot.  Producing another generation is a societal necessity since exactly zero ordinary humans are immortal and thus without a next generation society will cease to exist.  It is therefore common sense that any promotion or public exhibition or depiction of any other form of such a dangerous act that cannot produce another generation is against common sense and ought to be prohibited by law.  Right?

Since the only way to be completely certain that you will not wind up with a serious disease or die when engaged in penile/vaginal intercourse is for both participants to be virginal when they first have sex, and remain monogamous thereafter, and you must engage in this act in order to produce another generation which is necessary for society to continue it is thus common sense that laws prohibiting anything else when it comes to sex are not only reasonable they must be debated and passed since they're of great public benefit and significance.  Right?

Given all of the above anyone promoting or otherwise teaching children about any so-called "alternative" are by definition placing said children at risk of permanent disability or death and at the same time damaging society's capacity to continue to exist and thus it is common sense that such should not only be prohibited if you do it you should face capital punishment because your crime is not just against a child, it is against all of society.  RIGHT?

Ok, let's get off sex for a bit.

A college degree is a credential that claims you have mastered some subject to a specific level (e.g. Bachelors, Masters, etc.)  It is common sense that the most skilled and capable candidates will be the easiest, and thus most-efficient, to teach the required material to and thus it is always cheaper and more efficient to accept and teach them in favor of anyone else.  In addition it is common sense that forcing someone to pay for something another person consumes or uses is called "stealing", and is a criminal act.  Therefore all "affirmative action" admissions, test "bonuses" for various groups, scholarships based on any criteria other than academic merit and similar are crimes.  It is common sense that every member of any institution that does or has done this should immediately be arrested, indicted, tried and imprisoned.  Well?

At all levels of education, in fact, "passing" is a credential.  If you graduate from High School that diploma is a statement that you can read, write, perform arithmetic at least through basic algebra and more.  Therefore it is common sense that "social promotion" and allowing someone to graduate without demonstrating these capabilities is a fraud upon not only the person in question but employers and the public at large and since fraud is a criminal offense any teacher or school administrator who participates in same must be locked up -- now.  Well?

Folks, firearms are tools that have as their design purpose killing things.  This is in fact common sense.  However, despite the fact that we have "civilized" large swaths of our land it remains true that from time to time something needs to be killed for various reasons.  Therefore it is also common sense that everyone should know how to reduce the risk inherent in the use of said tools and at all times be armed because, frequently without prior warning, something needs to be killed and, some percentage of the time failure to kill said thing when required means you die instead.

And finally, is it not common sense that someone who tries to put in place a mandate that you must die instead of whatever needs to be killed, whether that occasion has arisen because you have a requirement to eat (and said thing is a suitable source of nutrition) or is a violent predator about to kill you, your children or someone else who you care about is in fact a monster and perhaps they, themselves, are indeed one of those violent predators who needs to be killed?

Thus ends my treatise on "common sense."

The problem is that we're facing loons who find the very concept that there is any absolute truth at all offensive.

Common sense cannot be taught and a politician is the last person one would turn to for examples. The self guided process is to simply observe, analyze and conclude. Emotional thought always corrupts the end result.

All true.

Sadly, Common Sense isn't so common any more. The ability to follow a chain of cause and effect has declined significantly over the last 30 years, to the point where the desire to bother has been removed from a significant fraction of the populace.

"Common Sense" has been reduced to a label with which to bash dissenters over the head.

Common Sense says anyone trying that sort of bull shit deserves a knuckle sandwich, forthwith.

Common Sense - according to this article Pfizer has not, nor will they ever, produce Comirnaty. Therefore an FDA Covid shot from Pfizer is not available. Furthermore, since many of the shots were not kept at the required frozen temp, many (most?) degraded and in essence most people merely received a placebo.

People, use common sense!

Karl, Agreed 100%.

I'm predicting that in the near future, "Accute lead poisoning will be a major contributor to death among those deficient in common sense, as well as accidental and assisted suicides".

How about this: common sense says a human fetus is a living person. We could do this all day.

It suggests a pattern: public policy = common sense corrupted by ideology and personal fetish.

This type of Common Sense was part of the culture under which this country was founded. It remained until the revolutions of the 1960s, and it's been downhill ever since.

Is it "common sense" that concealed carry permits aren't honored in all 50 states, like drivers and marriage licenses?

Is it "common sense" that to purchase devices that make a gun quieter, and thus safer to hearing, that one must provide fingerprints, a photo, pay a $200 tax, and wait 1 year?

It is "common sense" that openly carrying legal items that one has legally purchased is illegal in many states?

And so on.

I am hearing that "they" want to raise the age to buy semiautos to 21 years old. Fine, but only if they raise the voting age to 21. The net effective of that is roughly a 2% swing away from the Democrats. If you aren't responsible enough to own a gun, no way you are responsible enough to vote.

Thomas Paine has been rolling over in his grave so fast that the whole world has turned into a big blur anyway. Maybe that gives him some comfort.

It's justifiably immoral to deal morally with an immoral entity.

Unfortunately @TickerGuy, you know that logic and facts (i.e. actual Common Sense) have nothing to do with what politicians are talking about when they say "Common Sense". They mean feelz and emotional manipulation to rile the stupid masses into demanding and cheering for the end to all of our freedoms. Taking away the right to keep and bear arms is one of the biggest hurdles to 'building back better' so it has to be deleted.

It's election time.

As is their custom, leftist marxist demoncraps use wedge issues to get their lazy, depraved base off the couch and to the polls every two years, right on cue. And the corrupt leftist "media" carries their water.

The only right that democraps care about it the ability to murder babies as they shoot out of the womb.

All the rest are "rights" as long as you agree with their stupidity and depravity.

As tragic as the TX skool shooting was....the fact remains it is open border and leftist social policies turning them into feral jungles. Open borders have turned many parts of TX into a toilet. This skool was no exception. Lockdowns were a weekly occurrence from what I read. most like a combat zone.

Aren't you glad your government is more concerned about Ukraine's borders than our own?

I love it KD!

While we're on the meanings of words, anyone else find it strange that the illegal suppression of our 2A is called "control," but the in the mad ravings of the Left, when they try to suppress our 1A, society never calls those efforts "speech control"?

These battlelines were sadly drawn up long, long ago, and it's unfortunate that our fathers and grandfathers didn't realize how accepting these language tricks would lead to massive shifts in the Overton Window (so??) layer!

Part of the problem is that we spent over a hundred years more interested in intelligence as opposed to common sense.

Simply think of all of the above average and high IQ people who support left-wing communism, COVID-BS restrictions and treatments and everything mentioned in Karl's article above.

Then look at the high average IQ of China, North Korea and lest we forget, the Germans of the 30s and 40s who were rather high IQ and noted for their intelligence among the general European population. How did these all work out?

Common sense is not so common.
Most folks cannot complete a basic logic puzzle so getting them to actually connect the dots on your argument because logic means nothing compared the their FEELZ.

The autopsy on this corpse of a country is going to be epic. Teaching actual Roman history instead of the textbook version would be helpful regarding monetary systems, corruption, politicization of everything, and quickly collapse can engulf a civilization that appears to be humming along quite nicely. Instead, we teach racist ideas, fail to demand actual competence, and demonstrating how stupid our education system has truly become. Idiots.

Gotta quibble about scholarships, any private individual or private group can donate money for a scholarship on any basis they want and it need not go to the most academically gifted but the person who fills the nature of the bequest. It isnt a crime and Id say it is common sense to allow donors to set the terms of their endowment. As long as the recipient meets the terms of the scholarship and has enough marks to qualify for the subject that is all that matters.
Now taxpayer funded scholarships are a different l matter but even there it is possible that certain scholarships are reasonable (for example returning GIs after the war).

Disagree if the college is in any way funding it. Why? Because the other students are in fact funding it by force.

Civil Society requires 99%+ consent.
Stop consenting and it is forced to stop. Always.

In the 1920's the great Scots-Irish propagandist/ad man Edward Bernays was tasked by a tobacco company with increasing cigarette use in the American public. Bernays was well qualified to do so as he had sold America's entry into the first world war as 'making the world safe for deeemocracy" and the "war to end all wars" rather than its true purpose of ensuring the viability of fellow tribesman JP Morganthau's French and British war bond investments. Bernays hijacked some of the women's movement of the day by persuading a lot of women in a parade to smoke during the parade. He referred to cigarettes as "liberty torches". That sounds a lot more people friendly than "Cancer rods for smokers". The stunt worked and it became more socially acceptable for women to smoke in public and the tobacco companies had a huge increase in demand for cigarettes.
Public disapproval of the Biden administrations attempts to further undermine the first amendment with the implementation of the misinformation bureau failed because enough of the public saw it for what it was and began to ridicule it.
Now we have another campaign for "common sense" gun control. This emotional appeal would easily fail were it presented as a further step to put the public at the mercy of tyrant wannabes in the government. We already have a government agency designed for the specific purpose of abrogating out second amendment rights; it is the BATFE. Add another "common sense" restriction to the 1930's firearms act, the 1968 gun control act, the Hughes act, and we end up with fewer rights.
Any CONgress-critter saying the words "common sense" is attempting to deny us our rights. They should be driven from office and shunned by society as should any celebrities and media people promoting any gun control.
We should appreciate the 2nd amendment for what it is, tyrant control.
