Our insight from raising two boys is that the instructions for feeding are too restrictive. We were determined to have only breast milk for the first and when there was low production at first, he was dehydrated and wound up hospitalized. This was a nightmare as they had to follow protocol and take a spinal fluid sample . Of a 5 day old. Took the expert at the NICU to accomplish it. Then he was put on IV antibiotics. We kept him from solid food for the recommended year.
Big picture, we are omnivorous mammals. If they can grab it off the table, they can eat it. Although there is that unpleasant transition as they start to eat more food and start their gut biome.
I am guessing that Karo syrup is added to the condensed milk to get the kids to crave the sweetness.

There is also an emotional bond that develops between the mother and child during the breast-feeding process. Is breaking this bond a part of the reason for a decline of the family in America?

This is why I love this site's commentary. That was profoundly deep and provides me with something on which to ruminate as I get my irrigation working again.

Why isn't there an app for making homemade baby formula?

Tim Cook is really letting us down.

With 2,3,5? million southern border crossers this year, we'll be getting over a million anchor babies next year. All needing the free brand of infant formula.

Thanks Joe.

@Wishiunderstood

I looked at Weston A Price's homemade baby formulas. I had to laugh. I remember having a newborn and believe me, real mothers do not have the time, energy or access to the ingredients mentioned to even consider going that route!

Canned milk, Karo syrup, vitamins and water? Probably what my mom fed me in 1952, and I'm still thriving.

Breast feeding is still actively and successfully promoted by groups such as La Leche League.

Baby formula plant shutdown? Click bait, distraction, an emotional hot-button issue like abortion.

What if it's ALL "fake news?"

I remember driving with Dad to the stock yards with 10 hogs. Now, if you have less than a semi trailer (or three) they will not take your animals. Same with all crops.

You must be in a bad area. Round these parts, the local slaughterhouses are booked through the year. You can take just one animal in.
Or you can go down to the local Amish farm (maybe 10 miles away) and sell your animals at the twice monthly auction.
I'm still trying to find a cow I can go in on someone else with (you buy 1/2, I'll buy 1/2)
I suspect that things will start to go "hyper-local" - as in, local will become how far you can get on a bicycle, easily.

Wasn't Russia's economy torpedoed much more directly than a single plant closure, with the sanctions of the past decade, yet fared much better than we are right now with these missing chemical milkshakes?

If Putin is such an evil man, why didn't he let his people suffer, using the easy excuse of sanctions destroying supply lines and credit availability?

I'm sitting over here in Moscow wondering whose leaders actually hate them more; or is my presence here in muh Russia biasing my analysis of these two situations?

It is more appropriately denoted as "high treason" - actively and with malice aforethought, aiding and abetting the enemies of these United States. I don't use the term "traitor" lightly, and I am unfamiliar with how often (if ever) that it's been prosecuted in this country. Rosenbergs maybe, but I don't know. In any event, nothing will change so long as these traitors aren't making their way through the justice system and ultimately convicted and sentenced to Leavenworth or the gallows.

Mr. Denninger,

Thank you very much for this post.

MD here. Do not comment often but I feel I need to today.

So much of the supply chain issues have molted into some mild hysteria over the past few years. However, just like this baby formula issue, things are getting all too real in medicine.

My work load has drastically and exponentially increased in just the past few weeks. Shortages abound. Medications, walkers, crutches, bipap machines, catheters, all kinds of things are suddenly not just expensive but scarce. If you think this is getting better anytime soon, look at the cargo and shipping maps all over the Eastern Half of China. I have been screaming for years this is a national security issue. My colleagues thought I was crazy. Not so much, anymore.

Some of the medications are nothing to switch to Plan B. For example, converting losartan to valsartan or similar. All will be good until Plan B is scarce and we are hitting the wall in multiple areas there.

All kinds of insulin and rheumatology and chemo drugs are getting to be a real problem. These are not so interchangeable.

Just this week, we are seeing shortages of potassium baths for dialysis and IV contrast media for X-rays. Among other issues. When this kind of stuff hits the wall, we are in for some third world type issues.

I feel I need to do a PSA for regular Americans.

Put the Cheetos down. Quit smoking. Exercise. Get out in the sun. Quit drinking like a fish.

I am older. I am used to being creative in medical practice. Make sure you are seeing a doctor you can trust. The under 40 crowd of doctors in this country have been trained to be creative in things like pronoun choice. I really worry how they are going to deal with these changes. I really do.

Get as healthy as you can right now. Winter is coming. Your best health care system in the world is woefully unprepared.

Mr. Denninger, thank you again for all you do.

@Abelardlindsey: Social media companies can get away with being fake because Boobus Amerikanus wants, no, NEEDS to be lied to. Over a decade ago I would go onto clown boards like freerepublic and for entertainment tell the rubes how "reality" TeeVee was almost entirely fake. You would have thought I had just told a room full of 4 year olds that Santa wasn't real. Let's take Pawn Stars for example. The wife and got married in Vegas by Elvis at the quickie wedding chappal next to that pawn shop. That morning there were people lined up in the parking lot to get in. We thought it was just because it was a big tourist attraction due to the TeeVee show. Not that day. They weren't open for business. Those people were professional extras from Kalifornia auditioning to get gigs pretending to be the people who came in to pawn or sell the crap they used on TV. The typical customers just didn't have the look that the producers wanted.

Four children sickened nationwide.
Two of those died.
No Salmonella found in the Abbot Plant
Genomic Testing of the other bacteria suspected does not trace back to the Abbot plant.
Abbot does acknowledge that a strain of the genus involved was found in it's non-processing area.
No contamination has been shown in its recalled formulas.

I guess they didn't pay a biggest enough bribe to the FDA and so are still closed.

That isn't the local knock em in the head places.

You used to be able to sell to the big packers in dribs and drabs.

Grandpa played with cattle. Some times, he would only have six to sell one year. He didn't go to the small shop, he went to the stock yards and they were sold to the big packing houses.

Those small shops were in danger of being shut down. Above a certain kill level, you need at least one degreed vet to "inspect" the animals coming in. You have to pay for them, though the vet's check is often from the USDA. Otherwise, you can't sell to the market. You can custom butcher, which is what you are talking about, but if you don't have an establishment number it is limited.

The diesel shortage on the east coast can be attributed to one thing: Russian Sanctions. While Russian oil was only 7% or so, the VGO feedstock and rough diesel from Russia made up roughly 50% of east coast refineries feedstock for diesel runs. Plus, pipeline capacity to Linden NJ via Colonial is normal. Greensboro NC tank capacity is normal which means batches from Gulf coast refineries are normal. There is only one additional pipeline from the west feeding the east coast. That is a Buckeye Pipeline that originates out of Ohio and splits across Pennsylvania and another branch that goes up to Buffalo then across to Albany NY. The rest is barged from the gulf coast refineries to Port of New York. Getting refined product into New England is pretty much limited to barging out of Port of New York.

What is putting sand in the gears is the diesel being exported from the gulf refineries to Europe. That is where the market is. The east coast refineries are limited to a specific type of crude oil that for the most part has to be barged into PONY, or that Russian stuff. The United States has painted itself into a corner that is going to be hard to get out of. Some are throwing out using trains to move diesel from the west coast and mid-west. The problem is the lack of loading and unloading infrastructure for refined products and the nightmare of moving trains east of the Mississippi River.

No green energy is going to save us from ourselves. I want to believe this cluster was uncastrated by someone with a master sinister plan. I have come to believe our "Leaders" are really this stupid. They really believe their plan is good and will lead to prosperity.

Regardless of the evidence.

Tdurden, the MBA's only did the companies bidding and that was because of demand from consumers. The reason the US has lost its textile and footwear industries is because consumers DEMANDED cheap products. To meet the consumer demand these products could not be made in the US but started into Mexico, then that got too high, on to China until that one got to high and now into third world countries and India.
The responsibility can be placed squarely on the shoulders of the American consumer. We got what we wanted.

" and once babies try the bottle, they never go back, its way easier."

It may be easier, but many still 'go back'.
I'm not a baby expert, but most (all?) premies start out on the bottle.
Many of them "convert" to the real thing once mom is ready.

My wife grew up on a dairy farm. She recounts her family walking out to the milk tank and dipping a pitcher in and drinking the milk without pasteurization. She did this all the way through High School.

My wife stopped nursing at 6 months and immediately converted the kids to whole milk. Our family physician (did not have a pediatrician) had no issues with this approach. All three kids grew up healthy with only their ability to listen being impaired.

Today, one of my kids' pediatricians have recommended that whole milk not be started until a child is at least a year old and my other kid's pediatrician is recommending that kids never be given milk. Fortunately, my kids have listened to their mother and started their kids on milk (early).

The only ill effect is that my grandchildren don't listen well either. Must be genetic or a product of us cursing our own children with "I hope your kids act the same way you do with us"!

Times have changed but not for the better.

Ask to see said pediatrician's checkbooks -- specifically, the deposits.

Then throw them in prison -- or the stocks, and ripen up some tomatoes.

I had heard they their drying equipment was out of date and in need of replacement, but they had spent a lot of money buying back their stocks and not upgrading the equipment.

How true that is is a mystery, I don't believe half of what I read from news sources anymore and since it is not included in KD's article I would have to question its validity...

More evidence of America last - you can make your own formula with cow or goat milk and a fortified low carb protein powder and it'll be better than that crap they sell in the baby aisle. No coincidence that Corn syrup is the first ingredient on that stuff.

The FDA warns that is "dangerous", but like most institutions now, they are liars with an agenda.....Glad that veil has been pierced by many more people...

I wish I could upvote this 1000x. All the economic "benefits" of the last 30 years (at least) were created by Just-in-timing and offshoring everything for the sake of a few extra cents on the share price and bigger bonuses.

There is NO societal resilience left, except maybe in a few more self-sufficient pockets and that is by the personal choice of those in the pockets and it is by no means complete. Even the pockets are still dependent on non-negotiable inputs from the more fragile outside world.

This is why it is so important to BE YOUR OWN BACKUP as best you can. Cultivate personal resilience - financial, physical, psychological, living environment etc. because you cannot rely on these jenga systems to stay fully functional in a crisis.

We are under an administration that ****s stuff up and blames others. Trump removed a lot of regulatatory crap and Biden put it all back in. These people want to destroy the current energy structure with the vain idea they can runa diesel truck with a Briggs and Stratton engine. This is why socialism fails. They run things according to their vain imagination, instead of reality.

Europe destroyed their energy infrastructure and now they need ours. I heard recently we don't have all the refinery capacity reopened. There are likely only 2 reasons, either there isn't enough crude or the government is blocking it. The price of crude is $110 a barrel, so maybe they can't get the crude.

In the meantime, the Democrats have brought back the 1970's. Reagan bought the country a 40 year respite, from these bastards. Supply and demand, for Democrats, is a government program. Their policy is free for everything you have. You own nothing and like it. You will, if you could only get it.

90% of everything going on can be traced to this administration. All you have to do is listen to them. They are blaming Trump for the baby formula. Seems formula was on the shelves a year ago. I suspect it is the FDA, the same outfit that has continued to push the jabs, despite the likely death of hundreds of thousands and eventually millions. One of my sisters took 3 jabs, the third after the rest of us warning her. She is having chest pains and going to the doctor today.

Nothing like the immediate war on energy, waged from day 1, by the Biden administration, to upset the apple cart. This won't be a sort term problem. The policy is to restrict supply and the shortage will be long term, because we have already lost a year, on top of the damage done by the shut down. There is a time constraint associated with the production of anything. It will be easier to catch up on bsby formula, which involves reopeing a factory, than to move the needle on oil, gas, coal and even renewables, which rationally can only be counted as additional supply and not replacement.

Stupid is in charge and passing the buck is in play. These people are like pickpockets who help you look for your wallet. I wonder how many people aren't working because they are getting government checks or sick from taking the jabs? The Long Beach port isn't working in part because the State has totaly screwed up their freight system, under the guise it can be the way they wish it was. CV19 policies, not CV19, have made a mess of everything and we haven't seen the full force and effect of the Chinese shutdowns. We also haven't seen the full effect of the eventual shutting Russia out of the oil markets. This is a DC policy and part of a bigger plan to destroy the energy markets. Those who understod could see this coming a mile away.
