Damn those fish flying over the transom on their own..... -- Ed

How many TV shows started out really good and by the fourth season are trash?  How many movie sequels, threequels, fourpeats, penta-hopes, hexa-Hail Marys, and hepta-reallys are as good as the original?

There are some.  The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit were all solid for what they set out to do.

And that’s the last series I’m mentioning by name so this whole guest Ticker doesn’t get derailed into “but I loved that movie!” style objections.  Everyone has their own tastes and criteria for what makes good entertainment.  Besides, you don’t come here for entertainment reviews.

But we’re all familiar with the fourth season nosedive.  The first few episodes of any new series are uneven.  The actors and writers need time to get into the groove of their characters.  They learn what works and what doesn’t.  What the audience wants, which actors have genuine chemistry with each other on screen, and which ones should never be alone together again.  The first season is typically a bunch of “safe” plots, the second season hits its stride, and the third season is amazing.  Now these season numbers can vary, but the pattern holds.

Then the fourth season happens.  Despite all the good writing, the set ups, and the potential of the first three seasons, it sucks.  Either the characters behave contrary to established patterns, or the plot takes a bafflingly stupid turn.

The same thing applies to movies.  Only rarely is the third in a series as good as the first.  I’m not talking about the threequel released directly to streaming services.  (Originally I had written “direct to TV,” but I don’t know if they do those anymore; it all goes to Netflix or Hulu.)  I’ll revisit streaming in a bit. I’m talking about the general distinct decline in quality as movie series progress.

Some problems don't make a show terrible. Not every TV episode or plot arc will be amazing. When actors or writers leave, it can wreak tornado level havoc for a few episodes until things settle down, but they do and it’s still fun to watch. Sloppy world building is a wrecking ball for the plot and character, but skilled writers and actors can salvage this and keep doing their jobs, which is entertaining the audience. The show might be bad, but it’s still fun to watch.

Neither of the previous two examples necessarily ruin shows, because they do not make them BAD.  With capital letters.  BAD is something so awful you need a shower after watching it.  You just feel dirty.  Maybe you can’t put your finger on exactly why, but something is seriously off.

Which brings us to streaming services. Any streaming show that is BAD is deliberately so.  There are zero excuses for it.

There are no episode time constraints.  There are limited advertisement requirements. Sexy Female Lead drinking a Coke or getting into her new Kia while dumping exposition is easy enough and doesn’t disrupt flow.  There should be no outside political constraints.  If one service doesn’t like the content, another will broadcast it.

What makes a BAD show?  Wokeness. As a rule, once they go woke, they’re broke.  Woke corrupts storytelling.  Woke adds nothing and only subtracts from world building, plot, and character.  Woke is a magnet.  Once one precept arrives others aren’t far behind.  Over time it becomes an unwatchable mess.  Here are a few examples:

  • A masculine character who overshadows the GRRRRRLLLLLL POWA gets neutered in the most insulting way possible.

  • The 80 lb girl bests 200 lb trained men in hand to hand combat with no magical abilities or other explanation.

  • When “gay” is someone’s sole character trait and they are never wrong nor face consequences.

  • The Magic Black Man explains things to whitey.

  • Men are always wrong and women are always right, no matter how much the plot suffers.

  • All couples are mixed race or gay.  Or both.

  • The white Christian man always did it.

  • The more inappropriate any relationship is, the more it is celebrated.

Remember, all of these are deliberate choices.  Woke and good can’t coexist.  The two clash and woke always wins.

Ok, why woke?  After all, most people don’t want the bullet points above, they want fun escapism.  There is no way anyone involved with entertainment production doesn’t know this.  As Tickerguy has pointed out numerous times, talent is hired for what they know and how well they do their job. If they don’t entertain people, they should be fired.

But we live in clown world, so we get never ending BAD.

Woke is a deliberate choice, why is it made?  How do these hacks have jobs?

God gave Satan the world.  I will not ponder why He did so, it’s above my paygrade.  Satan recruits humans and some of them are in the entertainment industry:  actors, writers, directors, camera operators, producers.  It’s a losing proposition for the human who is always treated like used toilet paper.

If they stay in Satan’s influence, over time they become more corrupt: they slip farther and farther away from whatever gifts God gave them.

God holds the power of creation.  He created the universe and everything in it.  He’s pretty bad ass and not Someone you want to******off.

God granted every living creature on this planet a touch of creation.  Humans and every other animal reproduces.  Insects, fish, plants, and even bacteria can.  This was part of God’s gift to us all.  He also blessed humans with creativity.

Viruses can’t reproduce without a host cell.  They invade and trick the cell into making copies of itself.  They’re not really alive and have no touch of creation.

Satan and other demons can’t create, only copy and destroy by corruption.

People who throw in with Satan are lower than bacteria.  Over time these evil adjacent people become like viruses: helpless without a host to infect and hijack. Eventually, they can’t create.

They can only copy or corrupt shows with woke, eventually destroying them.

That explains the endless reboots and BAD coming out of Hollyweird.

What a coincidental post. I only had one streaming service left (Netsux), and my wife complained to me about the latest season of some series she watches went over the woke cliff, and pissed her off. So we cancelled Netsux and are now completely free of any sewage from Hollywood coming into our home. The place smells better already.

But this issue begs another question. I get that 99.99999% of those who work in the "entertainment" industry are radical marxists. But even those scumbags love money. So what gives? How many box office bombs do you need before you go back to the tried and true (albeit predictable) ways of producing shows that generate profits, instead of being degenerate, and then failing?

It seems to me that this is purposeful, along with their cousins in the "media" and "music" industries. All are gawd-awful, akin to nails on the chalkboard. The intent clearly is to sway society, and it obviously has worked to a large degree. Look at the behavior of certain segments of the population. Many could use a good spanking.

To observe how nearly everything broadcasted has devolved over the last few decades is shocking, so I tuned it all out. This includes sports. Good riddance to all of it.

If art does indeed imitate society......we are doomed.

I never liked shows where there was one social message after another.

I guess that's why I watch so little.

When my kid was younger, one of the big issues I had with Disney is how parents are treated as morons and the kids always smarter. Especially the dads. To whit, Good Luck Charlie. The dad was the moron of the family, the mom was smarter but bat**** crazy and the teen girl was the only somewhat sane one. TV shows long ago abandoned the principle of parents being smarter than the kids which is why if I do sit down to watch tv, it'll be something like Andy Griffith or Leave it to Beaver or Gunsmoke.

Excellent point, well done.

Disagree with the theology, but not the message and its description of the end result.

Perhaps it is simpler. Something major and majorly good is produced by those accountable to the craft and product and as a result, their customer. Some franchise inertia forms allowing others who have their own reasons to ride on the coattails. By the time the rot is discovered, it is too late. This effect can find its way from the small business to the large company to the culture.

Disney is a special case IMO as it was corrupt and degenerate from the beginning with perhaps some of the good souls not seeing this and embracing that part of the lie which appeared good and wholesome. Certain religions have this problem too. Hate Roman Catholicism at its origin and core but never discount the amazingly good people who for whatever reason found their mission within its walls and contributed great things and admirable personal acts improving both it and mankind. This is not the only example. Enough of my theology.

Perhaps it is that all things, like too many seasons or sequels, must come to an end. This of course includes instances of evil. Evil too does indeed die.

A little something which sums up the metaphor nicely from my friend Maggie McNeill:

https://maggiemcneill.com/2012/09/05/eno....

"I truly respect producers who end a show while its still strong, rather than allowing it to jump the shark and degenerate into self-parody before finally limping into its grave. And I promise you that if I ever feel my creative juices ebbing and recognize that the quality of this blog is starting to slip, I will have the wisdom to say OK, thats enough, and go out on a high note."

"And that brings me to my main point (yes, there is one): I feel the same way about lives as I do about shows. Even if a person has a happy life, even if he has a spectacular life, everything has a point at which its best for it to end."

"...an individual who does not own and control his own body is a slave, and self-determination includes the right to self-termination. Quality, as I said at the beginning, is far more important than quantity, and a successful life is judged by its character rather than by the number of years it endures."

Same idea is found in the movie industry for the most part. Movies are more and more frequently remakes of movies from decades ago, only not as good.

If you want to watch good movies, find one from the 1940s to the early 1960s, when the characters reflected reality and where a character's departure from 'normal' was seen as something tragic in the end. (If Dad is wearing a tie while reading the paper in the living room, it's probably worth your time to watch.)

Current day movies are 80% CGI glitz and things exploding. The plot and characters are only there to rationalize having the technology on display.

Old movies are about plot and the characters, and they usually have something to say about how the world works and why straying from 'normal' usually winds up with outcomes that aren't desirable, just like real life, where everyone has flaws.

At some point the Hollywood culture went from learning to accept people, flaws and all, to an insistence that flaws be corrected via any punishment at hand, which serves more to demonstrate the flaws with Hollywood than with the people they insist on 'fixing'.

YMMV

I have often wondered what country is "Mystery Babylon" in the book of Revelation. I wonder no more. I believe it to be the United States. The harlot. The *****. The prostitute. The corruptor of the nations of the world. The "woke movie industry" is just one more example. I cut the cable a very long time ago. And I have zero interest in anything Disney or Hollywood has to sell.

Nailed it! My wife and I occasionally try to watch some new series on Amazon Prime. Usually within the first 15-30 minutes of the first episode they have checked all of the woke boxes you note above.

It is like clockwork and boring as hell to watch. Every show/movie can be predicted because you know the story is going to 'go there' in order to appease the screeching mobs on social media who have to have their insane worldview validated constantly.

Cut the cord. Don't pay for streaming services. Throw away the the TV all-together. All viable options. Another option is the one that I have chosen. Free streaming services only and I only watch shows produced before 2010. Shows made between 2010 and 2015 are somewhat watchable but the woke is just starting to come through and you will want to throw something at your tv at some point.

The downside to this option? The commercials. I look at it as doing recon. By seeing who is pushing all of the bullet points made in the Ticker I know who not to patronize. It is a long list that grows longer everyday. I save a lot of money by keeping my money in my pocket and not patronizing the companies pushing those agendas.

Couple of points
1- writers tend to leave around season 4, which is also when the original story board plot lines end. I can also imagine this is when actors renegotiate salary and costs sky-rocket
2 - the entertainment industry is owned by the same people that powered the Bolshevik revolution, and make no mistake, they HATE you. They want you demoralised, they want to ruin your connection to your people, history and lands. They glee at watching your children cut their private parts off as they demoralise you. This is why they are buying up the big, nostalgic franchises and taking huge dumps on them, they're subverting Western culture
3 - thanks to owning all of the federal reserves, profit is not a huge factor. This is how ESG can prevail, they have infinite (nearly) money
4 - to a lesser extent, Chinese ownership of the larger production houses in movies (hence so many sequels and reboots as these people are not known for originality) and to an even lesser extent, DEI - white males need not apply, even if they have historically been the greatest creative minds
5 - communists hate beauty. It reminds them that they have chosen to shun Gods grace and his perfect creations (is there anything more beautiful than the female form, even if they are a bit crazy?). This is why their architecture is drab, their cities disgusting, their appearance glum.

I appreciate that many here aren't religious, but it doesn't matter if YOU don't believe in Satan because TPTB seemingly do. It doesn't matter if you don't think you're at war, because others are certainly waging psychological and spiritual war upon you

There is an interesting recent case of a black woman author promoted through diversity, finding she can't actually write and so plagerizes someone else's work. She is caught out and writes an essay about why she plagerized for her novel. Except that essay, too, is plagerized.

And here is the b******t excuses the left makes for her. It's quite remarkable to read.

Boingboing itself is an interesting study in woke progressivism. I'm convinced it's a funded op of some kind.

I barely even watch tee eve, but when I do I find the content to be low brow and the wokey-ness to be a little more than annoying.

Hi all.. Longtime reader, first time responder.

It is true that Disney and all other woke enterprises will eventually decend into darkness, as they have no ability to exist except through parasitic action. Just like satan and every other parasitic small "g" god.

When referring to why you write,

"God gave Satan the world. I will not ponder why He did so, its above my paygrade."

I think the pattern I have to constantly remember is that God did not give the world to satan. God gave the world to Adam and Eve. THEY gave the world to satan. And everytime I choose "not God and His ways" I give another little piece over to satan. This community helps me remember to fight the good fight and keep my little piece of the world free from the Disneys and 4th seasons satans.
Thanks to you all for being in the fight.

The first example of what we now refer to wokeness that I can recall on TV was the black character in the series "Mission Impossible". Every movie/tv script should have a character named Brilliant Negro to highlight the white characters' lack of knowledge and technological sophistication. These scripts, whether movie, tv, or commercial advertising must portray white men as bumbling idiots who are taught life lessons by pre-teen girls. Let's not forget to include interracial couples and affable queers into the mix. What about a plot or storyline? No need, the inclusion of the woke characters is the story.
I haven't been to the movies in years and refuse to support the woke movie subscription services. They can all ESAD, after going bankrupt.

Not only can Satan not create, he and his minions hate all of those who can (i.e., God and the humans He created).

The evil ones appear to be purely left-brain driven. Like the Borg in Star Trek.

Right-brain thinking is in many ways much more powerful than left-brain. It is much faster, and is often referred to as "listening to your gut". Yeah, left brain can "do the maff", but right brain can reach the same conclusion in microseconds.

People (usually men with advanced degrees) think they are "smart" by shutting off that part of their brain. They are really stupid. I can't tell you how many PhDs I have dealt with who are idiots.

And women often conflate "following their heart" with lower limbic (reptilian) thinking. They aren't engaged in deep right-brain think when they leave a marriage of 30 years to chase the hot guy 10 years younger than them. That is pure lust, which has nothing to do with a pure heart.

True right-brain thinking (this is the creative side of the mind) is so powerful, but very rare.

The more they scream "Listen to me", the less we usually do.
The more they tell a story worth telling, the more we usually do.

You can scream "Don't hate Jews" all day day long and no one will listen.
Or you can make a film like Schindler's List and make people feel the living truth.

The director Stanley Kubrick reportedly refused to explain his movies.
Apparently, he thought it was up to the viewer to decide what the message was.
Something to think about.

"If you really want to communicate something, even if it's just an emotion or an attitude, let alone an idea,
the least effective and least enjoyable way is directly." -Stanley Kubrick.

Agree. Hate modern movies and have not watched a network TV show in over a decade. I got the message awhile ago that people like me are not their market. Why people keep watching that crap is beyond me, but seeing how so many people have been screwed over willingly I can see why. For an amusing take on modern movies watch The Critical Drinker on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCriticalDri.... His series on why modern movies suck is great.

@Dingleberry "But even those scumbags love money. So what gives?"

Simple: they love power and influence over the little people even more than money, and pushing the message is more important than making a good movie.

Go check out a hs play...and if daring, a University one. They cannt help themselves. Saw 9-5 a bit back and they turned Roz into a lesbian at the end...the same character that was doing an exotic exposition of her feelings for Hart....so in the tune of 45 minutes a horny woman goes to carpet muncher. It was in the last 2 minutes of the play.
I,was not quiet in my disgust of ruining what til then was a great rendition. They just cannot not do it.
