Here it comes....

Syria probably did use chemical weapons.

But is "probably" good enough for a shellacking?

Doesn't matter... looks like they're about to get it.

Oh, by the way, would someone explain exactly what gives us the authority to toss bombs at a sovereign nation that hasn't attacked us?  I mean it's not like we go take out seriously evil *******s when they shove a million innocents in the hole in 100 days, right?  (Rwanda, 1994.)

We took out Saddam. We took out Kadafi (or set it up to happen). How did that work out. All MSM is calling for action, that immediately makes me suspect. We have a long history of "doing something" without regard for what happens in the long term . We will never run out of bad people doing bad things all around the world. Who appointed us God?

Has nothing to do with the people and everything to do with somebody's agenda and how they can use it.

No. I'm not cynical. I haven't been cynical about anything and everything to do with governments and large organizations for 20+ years. Not me.

No sir.

Never.

The Pentagon obviously expects the Russians to back down from their stated response. But what if they don't? What if they retaliate with all they have and we wind up with a lot of ships going to the bottom? And, what will be the Chinese response? They also have weapons designed to sink aircraft carriers. Our navy has not faced a real adversary since 1945. This could wind up costing thousands of lives, and losing most of our force projection capability.

Events start to lead a life of their own, and suddenly 2018 is seeming a lot like 1914.

Trump is a damned fool to let this happen.

I have loads of foreign policy issues, but at least sympathetic on this choice as I do agree it's likely we have had massive civilian targets by the Syrian regime.

With that said, Syria is an absolute mess right on a geopolitical stage and there is so many potential ways things can go south. I have strong questions about whether or not those risks are fully understood.

Just look at everyone involved there:
1. We have whatever is left of the ISIS which appealed to Sunni Muslims around the world after Assad started his programs against them.
2. We have the Syrian regime forces.
3. We have Hezbollah on the side of the Syrian regime at Iran's command.
4. We have Russians and Iran involved with the Syrian government (without their help, the Syrian regime may very well have fallen; it seemed to be close to before major support came in). Russia seems to be the one who now best controls the skies there from my limited understanding.
5. We have the Kurds who both fought back the Islamic State and are trying to secure an independent country for themselves. They were heavily supported by the US for being the best fighters against ISIS (and whom we were already friendly in Iraq).
6. We have Turkey. They have many objectives, but the primary at this point is reversing Kurd gains. They consider the Kurdish leadership in Syria as aligned with terrorists in Turkey (debatable). They also do not want massive amount of refugees fleeing to Turkey though.
7. We have Americans there with a mixed objective. Somewhat they stand there as deterrence against the Syrian regime or Turkey advancing various areas (despite Turkey being a fellow NATO member).
8. We have Al-Qaeda and more moderate rebels.
9. Not as directly involved in Syria, but we practically have a mini-cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran in the Middle-East which is spanning multiple locations.
10. We have Israel which is going to target anything it considers a threat, primarily anything Hezbollah related which might get redirected their way.

That's all just in Syria right now. I might not be totally correct on all of it, but trying to keep up, that's where I see things. Wish I could say it was the area of the world that made me most nervous (unfortunately the Chinese moves and potential countermoves of others including the US have me more on concerned medium term).

I haven't a clue why we are there, but what I do know is we have a bunch of young people over their heads in debt, some got a degree with the debt, some did not, but few if any have decent jobs and no way of paying off their debt.

Who holds the vast majority of the student loan debt?

One reason why I voted for Trump instead of writing in Satan was that I thought he would get us out of that ****hole. I was certain Killary would have us in a hot shooting war with Russia within a few months.

Damn it.

Yes. The main reason I was glad Trump won was because it meant I wouldn't be vaporized in a nuclear fireball after Clinton attacked Russia in Syria.

Oh, well. I guess we got a few more months.

I smell bull**** with this "chemical attack" story. Not out and out calling it a lie, but it smells.

Syria is in ascent in its struggle against the various rebel groups. The war, for Assad, has been going well of late. Why would Assad now decide to poke the Eagle's nest with a stick by doing something rash, like a chemical attack, now?

And this attack comes just a few days after Trump said, albeit somewhat off the cuff, that he wants us to pull out of Syria altogether.

Smells rotten to me.

but you can never use just one, the last and only time they've been used we had to use two of a very limited number, maybe the only two in the world at the time.

There is nothing legal about attacking a sovereign country just because you think a crime was committed. The only reason to ever use military force should be in the interest of the people of this country. Essentially we're whoring out our service men and women for the Saudis.

Why the US acts as the World Police Force or Who's your Daddy?

1. The Economic Reason - Reserve Currency Status is how the US rules the world. That means the US "must" maintain global hegemony to remain the bo$$, the top dog, the leader of the pact.

2. The Extended Deterrence Reason - US is the only country with nukes that provides protection to its allies aka the Nuclear Umbrella. As long as you protect us we will follow you.

These 2 reasons work hand in glove and explains why the US acts the way it does on the international stage. It's all about Money and Power and its been this way since WW2 and will remain as such until the US is (gasp!) gone.

What would you do in Trump's position.

Case one: you are quite sure that some three letter agency staged it as it was claimed a month ago by Russia to frame you.

This is what i would do:
- Posture
- Send missiles (hundreds) but not people to not meaningful targets for Russia
- Communicate with Russia where the missiles are being targeted thru a backchannel
- Russia will "retaliate" by overriding a position of militia supported by the US.
- Face saved. Russia gain a position. Both gain.
- Call it a day.

Case two: you are quite sure that Assad did it to poke your image and reputation.
- Posture
- Send missiles (hundreds) but not people, to not meaningful targets for Russia but meaningful to Assad or Hezbollah.
- Communicate with Russia where the missiles are being targeted on very short notice to avoid Russian casualties
- Russia will "retaliate" by overriding a position of militia supported by the US.
- Message sent. Russia gain a position. Both gain.
- Call it a day.

It is like in the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK6_tjiz....

No irrational actors on either side. And as far as I can see there is no rational argument for a full war with Russia.

when you vote for the lesser of the two evils, you still get evil.

Russia is desperate to reconstitute its former influence and play a greater role in Europe. they have a huge demographic crisis which can only be resolved and palliated by a massive war effort from which will follow their own baby boom after they achieve economic hegemony over their defeated rivals. their real competition is China with its own problems. they will align with China to damage us and then the two will turn on each other. not going to be pretty and our dirtbag-in-chief is giving them the reasons that they will need to heat things up. Syria serves Russia's purposes due to geography. if we back off, the killing there will stop and Russia will calm down. it is as if we want this to heat up. perhaps he wants to be a wartime hero president. always thought that he was a neo-con. his children are too old to serve so he is at the ripe age to kill off the working classes. special place in hell for him.

he and his supporters have this vision of another 1950's -early 60's prosperity to start the consumer game all over with even higher tech. read the writings of his supporters and this is apparent. they are so desperately misguided. the world is too different for us to destroy everything and be unscathed to profit from the rebuilding. the other major powers will attack us on our shores and we will deserve it.

I once thought Trump lacked a filter. I think what he lacks is enough self-control and common sense to shut his mouth. But then again thes Russians ans Syrians may have been tipped off hours ago and this is twitter simply a convenient ruse to cover such a strategy?

Well the Syrians are running to Russian bases now. Is this Dea Vu? Seems like it happened once before......

Makes me wonder how much of this is due to advice from the war monger John Bolton. We have no business over there.

Let's wag the dog.
