The Chinese Would NEVER Backdoor Phones, Right?

Naw, something like this would NEVER happen....

Note: I don't have one of these devices and cannot verify if this is true... but if it is would you care to guess how often some awesome Chinese hackers might probe your phone and steal everything on it?

Oh wait.... darn, geek.com says it is real.....

If anyone reading this owns a ZTE Score M Android smartphone, your device has been found to include a backdoor allowing root access without user authentication.

The discovery of the backdoor comes via a post on the text storage website Pastebin. It has since been confirmed via Reddit by Justin Case of Cunning Logic and TeamAndIRC. He has confirmed with someone at ZTE that the backdoor does indeed exist and that a fix is in the works.

Oh look, we'll just make a master key!  You locked that door?  smiley

Nice guys, nice.... oh and ZTE makes more than phones -- they're the 5th largest telecommunications manufacturer in the world.

Things that make you go "hmmmm...." (and not in a good way either.)

Not surprising at all, the Israelis are known for this as well when it comes to telecom equipment.

You just pretty much have to assume that there's a backdoor built into just about every electronic device nowdays.

Especially the ones made in china.

From the "#"

# mount -o remount,rw /system
# rm /system/bin/sync_agent

That should take care of that.

Note that once you do that it's really gone. If you want root make sure you have it via a means you like first.

I remember the days when you didn't want to reflash your devices with homegrown ROMs or firmware because of the possibility of backdoors built in. Now the stock factory stuff has the backdoors already included. More down-is-up.

Thanks Genesis, Backed up the sync_agent file to my computer just in case then deleted it from the phone and restarted it. I already had root access to the phone through other means.

Would you prefer an open operating system or security through obscurity (the Apple model), Daniel? This is no feature of Android. In the security industry we say "if they have physical access, you've already lost."

Guess who by definition has physical access to every device? The manufacturers. Good thing we went to a service economy and shipped all of that overseas! Wait.

In all seriousness, I am still using an ancient flip phone without text messaging. You want to talk to me, you call and talk to me. Screw every last one of the USA carriers and their predatory billing policies.

Veeeery Interesting.....but not funny.

Glad I'm using QNX and not Android.

Another reason it's time to get away from UNIX and its variants in embedded and consumer systems.

The fallout should be interesting.

I wonder, will a software update to the next version of Android from the same vender include a copy of this backdoor, or will it be more cleverly hidden?

There is an interesting talk on embedded computer security, detailing how such things as heart defibrillators, automobiles, voting machines, etc. have been compromised by their wireless networks.

I never went the Smart phone route because I have to have a phone that can survive the washing machine...smiley

The other day I was returning from a trip when I was on a shuttle. My wife called and I let her know my ETA...When I hung up, a teenager-looking kid looked at me me in amazement and asked, "Did you just pull an antenna out of your phone?"...

Chinese have been providing various backdoors on USB memory keys (via self-installing autoexec scripts) for years. Nothing new here... This is less about stealing someone's credit card number, more about classical intelligence
gathering. A chinese government sanctioned intelligence gathering.

"Financial industry announces guidelines for mobile payments in Canada"

They're just waiting for the Mobil Payment Apps to start transactions through your bank account. Then these backdoors on these smartphones will really come in handy.
