As a software developer, today's laptops have replaced desktops for everything except viewable screen area. Even then, they are not far behind. postscript: I also write code for image processing pipelines. These things run in the background against data sets that are downlinked from satellites once a week. My interaction with the pipelines is to provide robust executables that produce images for the end users. My laptop could not execute these pipelines nor is it expected to.
