As KD said, sea time is a big issue. Like in aircraft, Capt. Sullenberger of the Hudson River landing has 40 years and 19000 hours of experience. That's what helped allot in his miracle landing. Also, the biggest thing I see in my investigating maritime events that is overlooked more than anything is a failure to STUDY THE WEATHER prior to getting underway. I don't mean the 10 second "it's going to be a nice day" clip you hear on the radio--that won't do. If you're going offshore--or even these large lakes, You best be looking personally at some satellite imagery and have an understanding of what you're looking at. Same is true with your location and time of year (Monsoons that come out of nowhere tend to be seasonal). In 30+ years I can't count how many would still be alive had they simply checked weather forecasts, understood it and the impact wind-driven waves can have on vessels as a result. 2009-02-04 18:31:55
