I up until 2 years ago - lived in Dallas - and now am in a very remote rural area - the place I live now - is in supremely better shape than Dallas citizens ever thought about being. I get absolutely despondent at times. I want to tell you a little story that I heard yesterday - that has everything to do with your post. And why I get so depressed. This virus - as you have stated - seems to take the cleaver to those who are obese, diabetic, hypertensive - or have CAD. It seems to do so more with these conditions than asthma COPD or immunocompromised status - which I find just fascinating. This is really unique in my medical training. It will be fascinating to ultimately find out why. This combination of things is called metabolic syndrome - and this seems to be a welcome mat for this virus. This has been for me a TEACHING moment with my patients - just like your post today --- lose weight - get off the carbs - exercise - etc etc etc. And many of my patients actually listen to me - and are taking this quarantine opportunity to go for it - I have been so proud of them. This is why I am so sad however - a former colleague of mine in Dallas - in a hospital controlled by MBAs - was called on the carpet earlier this week because he was doing the same thing - using this as an opportunity to teach his patients about weight loss, diet and exercise. He was told in no uncertain terms - that African and Latin American patients are not going to take too kindly to this weight loss stuff - the virus is clearly targeting these races because of class disparity in resources and not obesity - and if he does not quit talking like that - he will be terminated. OH YES OH YES THEY DID. This virus is going ape s*&t in America - because of the rampant metabolic syndrome going on every where. Viruses by their very nature - cannot be racist - the crap all over the TV about this is obnoxious. The virus is finding its victims easily in this country because we eat too many french fries and cheeseburgers. But our fellow citizens do not want to hear this - and our MBA class thinks this weight loss message is going to hurt their marketing and branding. May God have mercy on our souls - I will say with emphatic foot stomp attached - THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO BE FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET- IT IS IRREDEEMABLE AT THIS POINT - Karl - this message from me - is in no way a diminishment of what you said in this post - Your post should be on the front page of the papers- but instead we are turning this into a racial disparity issue.
