Will also add - lived in China for several years - this Xi thing combined with the new social blacklist ( 10 million people already on it prohibited from renting a house, running biz, riding in a train etc) is a very bad move.

It is essentially a dictatorship that has UN-peopled 10 million citixens and will undoubtedly add maybe another 50 to 100 million to the list.

Thats a slam dunk recipe for civil war.

If I can't get a job rent a house run a biz all because of some ****ty comment on social media or because I jaywalked (yes this is all it takes) then my life is over.

This is the Dazexiang Uprising all over again. Penalty is the same, might as well burn it all to the ground.

Chen Sheng was an officer serving the Qin Dynasty, famous for their draconian punishments. He was supposed to lead his army to a rendezvous point, but he got delayed by heavy rains and it became clear he was going to arrive late. The way I always hear the story told is this:

Chen turns to his friend Wu Guang and asks Whats the penalty for being late?

Death, says Wu.

And whats the penalty for rebellion?

Death, says Wu.

Well then says Chen Sheng.

And thus began the famous Dazexiang Uprising, which caused thousands of deaths and helped usher in a period of instability and chaos that resulted in the fall of the Qin Dynasty three years later.

The moral of the story is that if you are maximally mean to innocent people, then eventually bad things will happen to you. First, because you have no room to punish people any more for actually hurting you. Second, because people will figure if theyre doomed anyway, they can at least get the consolation of feeling like theyre doing you some damage on their way down.
