Four years ago this month I allowed a podiatrist to remove both great toenails (which is a fascinating thing to watch, by the way). When he finished he left his assistant to treat and bind the wounds, and to instruct me in post-operative care.|
The podiatrist also left a prescription for 30 hydrocodone tablets, which I'm pretty sure were the dosage and mix described by @Ckaminski. Well, I took the script with reservations about it.
On the way home it became obvious that recovery was going to get painful, so I stopped at my pharmacy, where I asked if they could dispense one pill only and keep the rest "on reserve". Answer: Nope, the "Dispense as written" box was checked, so they had to fill the whole 30.
My response? My then-wife's grandson was already an epic doper and pill-popper at age 16, and he still visited us once in a while, so I took the prescription slip home and shredded it. Handled the pain with beer, which worked out well enough.
The financial hit was more painful, though..."I don't accept insurance, so you pay me $500 per toenail up front."
