There are rumors that Coffee Lake CPUs (the latest) are not impacted, but I wouldn't take that as gospel without proof.
Further, in virtually every case there is ZERO motherboard compatibility between architecture revisions; the sockets are generally different electrically and physically to prevent attempted idiocy which would fry the auxiliary chipsets. The impact of this is that while you can usually upgrade between, for example, Westmere chips a Sandy Bridge CPU will not fit in the socket and thus at LEAST the motherboard has to be changed as well.
USUALLY this also involves changing the RAM out too since the timing and/or rev tends to change with the architecture changes as well.
