It would have likely cost them a bunch of in-warranty battery replacements.
I guess you're right. That short-term expense avoidance likely was the primary reason for doing this. The perceived obsolescence replacement purchases were going to happen anyway to some degree, but pushing it along was a nice side benefit while they kept their costs down in the short-term. It does make me ponder on just how much more they made off of selling the warranties and avoiding paying out on them than just making the batteries removable and selling replacements, though.
