The reports of the security guard saving lives would have HAD to have been known to be false by the police and press. There's no way that detail gets mistaken.|
It reminds me of the scene at the end of "LA Confidential" where the spin doctors realize that is isn't enough to have a villain to pin the corruption on; in order to get the public to buy their story, they need to assign a hero as well.
