North Korea: The World Got Smaller

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea successfully fired a long-range rocket on Wednesday, defying international warnings as the regime of Kim Jong Un took a big step forward in its quest to develop a nuclear missile.

There are a number of reports that the item perched atop that rocket achieved orbit. NORAD appears to have tracked the terminal portion of the rocket into what appears to be an orbital trajectory.

This is not small-ball stuff folks.

Sputnik was the Russian's way of announcing to the world that it was capable of nuking anything on the planet. Our orbital launches said the same thing. All orbital launches inherently do so, because achieving orbit means that you not only are capable of hurling a mass at the necessary velocity for the requisite distance to get out of the atmosphere but you can do so with sufficient accuracy so as to hit an orbital insertion window, which is quite difficult from a technical perspective.

If you can do that you can also hit any location on the planet within a reasonable level of accuracy as well.

In short our world got a bit smaller last night.
