"It's not supposed to matter to them who holds the position." That's never how it pans out, as the long history of Palace assassinations carried out by personally selected Palace security (Imperial Guards, etc), demonstrates all too clearly. Scumbags at the top tend not to survive for long, and those closest to them, become all too familiar, all too quickly, with just how much of a scumbag the person they are supposed to be looking after, really is.
