RIMM right now is in exactly the position Apple was in during the late '90's. Apple had bad hardware, bad a bad OS, not enough apps, and very poor leadership.

It took Apple at least a decade of rebuilding, and inventing new products that were high quality, to get where they are today.

Right now RIMM produces garbage:

-- crappy handsets nobody actually wants to buy

-- A poor OS (BB 7) which was just window dressing on BB 6

-- No apps. I had a blackberry for years (several models) and never bought an app off their store, they all sucked. I now buy apps for my iPhone and they appear automatically on my ipad as well.

-- Poor leadership. It took the board far too long to ditch the "co-CEO" guys who have been wrong for a long time. (just like Apple's leadership was wrong)

-- poor vision for the future

Of all the IT people I know, nobody is talking about the next version of BB or QNX or upcoming hardware. We think the platform is dead outside of government and maybe companies of 2,000 people or more. J6P is going iOS or Android because of the apps and integration. Everyone plugs in their smartphone or tablet at the beginning and end of each day in order to keep it charged for use.

Lifecycle on both BB and android phones is poor. try getting QNX on your current model BB. not going to happen. Try getting ICS on your current model andoid. might not happen unless you have a Nexus or high end samsung or HTC. Only Apple has been giving customers basically a three year lifecycle on OS releases, though they tend to slow down the older phones.

RIMM is toast unless they get a white knight hero to run the place.
