When you open a brokerage account for stocks, bonds, equities, and cash (i.e., not a futures or forex account), you are given a choice on the account application of what kind of account you want to open. In general, the two choices are "Cash" and "Margin." This designation can be changed at any time. Are the brokerages allowed to hypothecate, lend, or otherwise pledge in anyway, the assets in a "cash" account?
