Traffic can be routed through anywhere on the Internet. You can't trust it to take the shortest path. So yeah, people are stupid if they're not encrypting their sensitive content, and if they are encrypting it, the new Chinese supercomputer is not enough to break 128-bit private-key encryption or RSA with keys of a few thousand bits (in fact you would need a computer about the size of the whole universe to crack that).
