I should not go on twitter, it is like making a daily trip to peek in at an insane asylum....but mainly do it to try to help share posts and increase views for Karl's posts.

But the more crazy I see from this admin and spins on that angle on twitter, the more I wonder if "crashing the market" isn't also a trick they have up their sleeve.

- war
- death
- higher taxes
- out of control inflation

Check, check, check and check. And those are just the big ones......sooner or later, there will be a severe loss of confidence by all.

anyone else get the feeling that China is deliberately bringing down their population? They are going to be very short on all types of fuel and food this coming year. Natural disasters have hit them hard recently. Too many mouths to feed. Between that and the political infighting have them in a bind. No need to pick a fight with Russia when they can sit back, slow roll their own plans and wait for the US to dig ourselves up to our necks in this Ukraine fiasco.

As far as open war, seems to me that an illegal collecting welfare should be eligible to be drafted. Just sayin', two birds, one stone!

@Susanlauren - congrats on the closing date!! We are set to sell our house on the same date but haven't had any luck finding a decent, not overpriced place to move to. Good luck to you!

@Bakerv - Wellllllll.... don't be too sure.

There's some back-channel chatter that the Russki ship didn't actually get hit -- it was a malfunction of one of the missiles on board that was responsible.

Maybe right, maybe not. But that sort of thing DOES happen in a war.

So, is Russian a hard language to learn?

The Foreign Service Institute's rating system lists it as Category IV for English-speaking learners -- up there with such languages as Hindi, Lao, Hebrew and Urdu!

https://www.atlasandboots.com/travel-blo....

I totally disagree with that classification, however. I have been teaching myself Russian for the last three months (mostly via the free phone app DuoLingo, but I'm supplementing with other materials as well), and for me, at least, it's not as bad as they say. But since I can read in Spanish and French, and had one college semester of German, it may be that that makes it easier for me.

I don't expect to ever write or speak the language, but my goal is simply to be able to read Russian news sources and understand Russian commentators. On those two fronts I have made perceptible progress, though obviously I still have a long way to go.

Your mileage may vary. I am highly motivated and have a lifelong passion for language learning, so that may make it easier for me.

Anyone know the vote spread in Congress on this one?

Interested to see if any Republicans voted against it...

Given that Russia has total air superiority over Ukraine, won't they just blow up any and all materials openly coming in? I get that they can (and are) probably smuggling small stuff (ammo, guns, RPGs etc) via clandestine routes, but major military equipment (cruise missiles, tanks etc) is subject to be being destroyed almost immediately after it crosses the border, right?

Absolutely! So then they order even more weapons to replace the ones that got destroyed... which means even more profits for Raytheon, Lockheed, Grumman, etc.

Quote:
Raytheon CEO Greg Hayes recently told a meeting of shareholders that, Everything that's being shipped into Ukraine today, of course, is coming out of stockpiles, either at DOD or from our NATO allies, and that's all great news. Eventually we'll have to replenish it and we will see a benefit to the business.
...
The more weapons blown up by Russia in Ukraine, the more new orders come from the Pentagon.

I swear, it feels like we're on board the Titanic and the ship's ass is up in the air bobbing in the water. Our govt officials think we're ok because the ship hasn't sunk. However, we're about to get sucked down in a matter of minutes and there's not a whole helluva lot we can do about it.

Looking at the history of Russia, commitment to total war is in their DNA. I watched a documentary recently about a German tank commander who fought on the eastern front. He could not understand the mindset of the Russian soldier. They would throw themselves under tanks with grenades to try to stop the German tanks.

I've been watching a lot of Russian movies lately to practice my aural comprehension. Mostly fiction, but a couple documentaries. Even with the fictional ones, you DO learn things about the culture. Did you know that to this day, even in the most remote little villages in Siberia, May 9 -- Victory Day (or what we call V-E day) -- is a HUGE DEAL every year in Russia? Over 20 MILLION Russians died in what they call, to this day, the Great Patriotic War. Every living Russian family lost at least one relative in that war. To say that Russians have ZERO TOLERANCE for Nazis is an understatement.

Put yourself in a Russian's shoes. Your grandfather/great-uncle/cousin died fighting the Nazis. Your brother died in the horrific Siege of Leningrad (as Vladimir Putin's brother did, as a toddler). You see actual NAZIS in Ukraine -- the Azov battalion and others -- murdering your Russian-speaking relatives in the Donbass for the last 8 years, and then, in February 2022, Zelenskyy suddenly RAMPS UP the bombing, by a factor of about 30. Are you NOT going to DEMAND that your government respond?

Later, you find out that the U.S. -- with the current U.S. president's son even playing a key financial intermediary role -- has been funding multiple bioweapons laboratories just a few miles away from the Russian border.

OK, Mr. or Ms. Russian citizen, how do you feel about THAT?

What I want to know is: Is there ANYBODY in our foreign policy estaishment -- you know, the trained "experts" who are PAID to be smart and savvy about people in other countries -- who has bothered to exert even the most minimal amount of curiosity and imagination, as I did just now? The intellectual LAZINESS of these people is appalling.

Thumbs-up to multiple commenters here for seeing what kind of guy Putin is -- namely, very smart, very patient, and, most importantly, NOT suicidal.

I would only add that I'm actually grateful he's former KGB. Thanks to his own inquisitive mind and to having at his disposal loyal and competent intelligence services, I would guess that he knows us better than we know ourselves.

Which definitely works in our favor, given the idiocy of our own "leaders."

Stolen Elections have consequences.

Another reason they wanted Trump gone. The MIC (Military Industrial Complex) didn't like Trump because he didn't like wars. Trump did not want a war in Ukraine and there wasn't one.

Biden and his cronies like wars. They wanted a war and we have it in Ukraine. I wonder what all those Ukrainians are thinking after the millions they gave the Bidens, and the Big Guy allowed their country to get bombed back two centuries. I guess that wasn't money well spent.

The CCP has given the Bidens millions. So is their payoff the CCP and Russians becoming allies against US?

We spend $33 billion to protect Ukraine's border. Then spend $72 million to stop building the wall protecting our border.

The insanity continues and keeps getting worse.

Don't hold your breath, because the Republicans are not going to save us in November if they take over the CONgress. We may have a chance if they boot McCarthy and McConnell, but that is unlikely to happen.

Oh well. We may have to bend over an kiss our asses goodbye.

Notice that Thomas Massie voted no.

and if he does he will probably be compromised somehow.

Just happy to see him there spitting truth

Smart governments would never do that. Only stupid people (Gates, Soros, Schwab, Georgia Guidestones) want that.

Here is why. Think about a country with no welfare state. You can't spend money unless you first earn it. All consumption must be preceded by production. Furthermore, every person will be producing more than they consume. So a country with greater population and no welfare state, all other things being equal, will get richer faster than a similar country with smaller population.

Purposely reducing your population is stupid. Ask Japan. (They didn't do it purposely, but they are experiencing the effects of population decline.)

So lots of stingers and javelin and whatnot are being shipped. Presumably by multiple entry points, distribution networks and means of transport to multiple rear and forward locations. All the while Russian air superiority is destroying stuff, messing with the routes, destroying manifests etc etc. So how the **** would we know if some of it isnt diverted by criminals, broke arse reluctant conscripts or Russian sympathisers. Could crates of this stuff end up on the black market or could the Russians buy it on the sly and then use it against say US interests in Germany?
Kind of embarrassing to the US if their weapons are used with plausible deniability.

Karl replies to comments:

Conventional and make a hell of a mess; effectively-zero warning and literally nothing we can do to shoot it down. Then Putin asks "How many more would you like and oh by the way one right into Hoover Dam and everything west and south of Lake Mead is ****ed both on water and power. Get out of this conflict now, and we mean it. Your move."

Yes and yes. Isn't it ironic that we, here in USA, are basing our hopes on the common sense and intelligence of the Russian leader Putin. He has to be factoring in that a massive retaliatory strike from the USA will, if successful, irradiate much of Russia. And, if our demented idiots in DC do the big one on Russia they may include China. China will try and respond. Maybe. They the do and the world is truly screwed. Be something like out of a Nick Cole dystopian novel.

Karl are you sure you don't want to become dictator for awhile and, after that then do a Cincinnatus and go back to your land? You would most certainly have my vote.

We went to a fundraiser for Thomas Massie in N. KY a few weeks ago. He had some great stories about the BS that goes on in DC. Really nice, down to earth guy that we got to speak with for a bit.

I watched this video about his off-grid house, it's really interesting and he's a very interesting guy, MIT engineer.
