Why another Market Ticker area?

Simply put there is material that certain interests do not think you should read, and they like to threaten advertising relationships.

It's part of the "big tech" Cancel Culture, and its pervasive.  It's not helped by some of the "big titans", including Google, being less than forthcoming about what they do and don't like.  For instance, since the outset of my running advertising with Adwords, I have occasionally received an email notice that "there are articles that have ads disabled because they allegedly violate policy."

Ok, so what are they?  They send me a link which goes to the "policy center" and not once has that ever returned anything except "an error occurred and we told the technical people about; they'll fix it."

No they don't.  It has never been fixed, and several years ago I sent an email inquiry into them asking what was up with that -- and got no reply.

Can I exempt articles from advertising if I know they won't like them in advance?  Sure.  I could, for example, take anything in a certain category and not have the system display ads.  The problem is that if I do that then what do I do with the top page that displays several articles at once, as is true for a newspaper?  Am I forced to omit those from the display on the front page?

That is what is being coerced there, isn't it?  "Get it off the front page -- or else!"

Well fine: I'll do it for them.  All the things that "might" draw such fire will simply go here.  With no ads and its own "main page."  The never will be ads on this page until and unless some other advertising aggregator that does not deal with "big tech" wants to run ads on this content specifically.  If you are such an entity look to the right and there's my contact information -- let's make a deal.

Is this a bad answer to the problem?  Well, it's not a great answer.

But it's the best answer I have for now, other than shutting up, which I'm not about to do.

If you want this instead of the regular Market Ticker you can always get to it directly via http://market-ticker.org/nad, for "no ads" or, if you prefer, yes, I have nads.  You choose.  It's easy to click back and forth as well; just look to the top right at the Main Navigation panel.

Enjoy.

@Blue.ridge.steve - The back end code would have to be gone through and re-validated. It is almost-certainly wildly out-of-date with PayPal's API.

Fuck PayPal, try Stripe.

Our business does very little CC processing except for an occasional small license purchase. We used PayPal in the past. But they charge a monthly fee for processing and then high transaction fees (at least they did when we used them a couple of years ago). Plus, once you turned off the service - which we did because we only had 2-4 transactions per year and they wanted $30/month to keep it turned on - you had to go through their approval/underwriting process again which usually took 1 week+ before you could do a transaction. Not very customer friendly.

We moved to Stripe. There is no monthly fee, their per-transaction fees are lower, and they never shut us off. We don't use their APIs for integrating into a web site. We just process transactions in a web browser. But it seemed like they had their act together as far as web site processing when I looked at it.

Biggest difference is that PayPal doesn't charge transaction fees if money originates in a bank account rather than a credit card. If you want that, then PayPal may be your only option.

Anyway, thought I would throw that out there if you do consider re-enabling donations. Which, BTW, I would certainly make if it was possible regardless of what processor you use.

Full disclosure: I have NO affiliation with PayPal or Stripe other than being a customer.

It is very unlikely I will do anything of that sort unless I was to set up an LLC or similar for some other reason.

Alright, for the noob that I am in this arena, what does this do? What they wanted to do in the first place? Remove their ads.
Does this help the cause or is just a fuck you?

@Maynard -- No, the problem is that if there is one article that gets flagged but is on the "newspaper-style front page" then the ENTIRE FRONT PAGE is flagged. Since they won't tell WHICH article it is and I deliberately shut off ads partway through the day to manage earnings (intentionally suppress them) and their report back to me is late (usually mid-afternoon) it is often difficult or impossible to know what pissed them off.

But, I can guess, and taking those off that page and onto another one which is *not* part of their selection removes that issue. If I could see the URLs they're pissed off about it would be easy for me to code around it and not piss them off at all but if I have to force those articles off the front page and thus make them very hard to find then it's not acceptable anyway. This way there's a "front page" that doesn't have that problem for articles in that classification.

I could block their spider in here too but I'm going to go THAT far. Yet.

It IS blocked in The Bar because you need credentials to get in there, and they don't have 'em.

From my perspective, the censorship noose is tightening. You are the third, well-known, person with a site/publication who, in this past week, has posted on this situation including making changes to avoid said situation. You are creating a no-ad space; the second person is removing all content related to Covid-19. The third person doesn't know specifically what was offending in the video (and can't get an answer although has attempted to do so) - but has a speculative guess and is now attempting to avoid said subject.

To see three of these situations from well-known people in a week is alarming to me. It is probably a good thing that all three happened in this brief period in that maybe it would have otherwise escaped notice? While I doubt that it would have escaped my notice, had it not been over the course of a week I would not have been so motivated to post this observation here. I am deeply disturbed by this set of events.

@Cminor - Yes, we are all getting a lesson in how dangerous concentration of power is. The government, the media, the drug companies, schools, and other corporations have joined together to inject poison into everybody and brainwash them into believing it will save them. The independent voices like the Market Ticker are saving many people from harm. I would imagine in China they have no access to dissent at all. We have to make as much noise as possible to stop this descent into tyranny.

respectful suggestion that you make this category's link even more prominent on the regular first page of the site, with an explanation as to why. Perhaps, don't shoot me, a popup that repeats at every visit where and why.

Yes, navigating this site is a bit of an intelligence test and helps to self-select. However, it is a shame that the greater market will miss some of your best work.
