Sometimes I'm too long winded. Here's the short version:

On the lake where I live some of the same people with 'Shutdown Line 5' signs are deliberately polluting the lake for selfish 'I've got mine' reasons.

@Tickerguy -- I don't have a dog in that Line 5 fight (except to the extent I explain below). I have high efficiency mini-splits down to 10 degrees or so -- all but 20-40 days. 40 days below 10F is a really cold year. Electric baseboard heat (ouch!) supplements the mini splits below 20F as well as a couple rooms cut-off from the mini-splits. Mini splits are not so efficient at 0-20 degrees, but still cheaper than electric.

I'm told their [Enbridge] engineering is top-notch.
I just wonder about the humans running it.

"The NTSB ... found that the operating firm, which had received an automated signal from the pipeline that a breach had occurred, misunderstood or did not believe the signal and attempted to continue to pump dilbit [diluted bitumen] oil through the pipeline for 17 hours after the breach."

All I know is that what I used to enjoy up there no longer exists as it's been polluted by the PEOPLE who moved there.

If I had a spare neutron weapon I know where I'd use it first.

I live on Lake Michigan about 10 miles from Line 5. You are clueless. I have 100 percent electric heat in my home. It's comparable if not cheaper than propane. If you believe Enbridge is the only one capable of providing propane, think again. Oil spills? Check out Enbridge's track record. There is no way of containing a leak in the winter. The only support Enbridge gets in the U.P. is from employees and those who are dependent on revenue from Enbridge. The risks far exceed the gains. Yoopers resent outsiders telling us the right way to handle Line 5. We sure don't need someone from Florida telling us how to keep the Straits of Mackinac safe.

the same turnover of older residents dying off and being replaced by downstate and Chicago suburbanites is taking place here.

It's the same story all over America. Vermont anyone? Florida, former conservative places full of decent hard working multi-generational families. They get displaced by higher cost of living and new ridiculous restrictions.

The solution is to do the following. Reorder monetary policy in terms of the laws and common sense to crash the real estate markets of liberal urban and their suburban areas. Break the backs of municipal unions so that retirement does not look like the CEO of a Fortune 1000 and does not start in any form until age 65. Crush big ed and med by similar means. Those who make their money in the equities markets will not have the same windfalls possible with sound monetary policy. Why, you say?

Then these liberal denizens will not be able to cash out on everyone else's dime and relocate to these areas. They will get to spend retirement in the liberal enclaves where they lived their working years instead of relocating to **** up some place with more conservative fiscal policies. I know their game. During their working years they overspend to isolate themselves from most of their city's or metro's urban problems secure in the knowledge that upon cash-out day, they go to a nice place. The over-valued real estate is the greatest contributor to their ability to relocate. Crash this and they get to eat their own cooking.

And it does not taste like chicken.

Oh, @Yellowvest is another one of those greenie jackasses.

Heh, this is your dog and your hunt, so have at it. But the facts are what they are when it comes to what goes down that pipe and a huge part of it is NGLs, which if they WERE to spill would do nothing to the environment since without the pressure they turn into vapor, rise and dissipate into the air.

Now the crude, yeah, that would be a problem. And I'm also well-aware of the company's ****ups, including in Kalamazoo -- which was 100% human, as they had an alarm on pressure immediately when the breach occurred.

As for "oh there are other ways to get propane in here", you're right. There are. Every one of them has a higher risk than a pipeline does.

But if you want to **** your fellow man, have at it. You're probably one of those rich **********s who moved up there from ****Cago and thinks everyone else has unlimited money lying around. I contemplated buying property up there but it was the people, just like you, who made that a hard NO.

Well @Fumei, that's likely.

There always have been a small contingent of leftist wish-mongers in that state; they're everywhere, but in small numbers outside of the obvious places (Detroit, Flint, Lansing, etc.) I knew a few of them when I used to live up in that part of the country a long, long time ago. There are a few here, and a few there, just like anywhere else.

But outside of the "big city" areas ("big" being a relative term in that part of the country and specifically in that part of the state) they were vastly outnumbered. The problem with being one of those sort of folks in a relatively harsh environment is that your "wokeness" collides with your desire to remain alive, especially if you're someone of ordinary means. The wealthy care much less. There's a huge difference between having an income of $20k/year (or $10k/year a couple of decades ago) and $100k/year. The latter is almost impossible to do in that part of the country organically, and if you do manage it you're doing it in some form of industry that is rather humbling in terms of being a dick to others; you won't have that income for long if you pull that sort of **** on the local population.

As Karlinmichigan noted what has happened in the northern part of the LP, especially the TC area (although not exclusively) is that a lot of people with money from Chicago (in particular) have showed up with their lefty, greeny attitude. Leelanau and Grand Traverse Counties have gotten it worse than anywhere else up there, but they're not alone. It had gotten pretty bad in the mid 200x years; I marveled at what people thought their residences were worth at that time. It's gone into orbit since, especially with the cost of living there.

One thing I find tremendously amusing, especially around the Mackinaw City area, is the utter stupidity of people who are "no carbon" folks. Yes, their token windmill can be seen from the highway as you come up I-75. But what nobody wants to discuss is the gas-fired small power plant right outside town -- literally right down the road near the old abandoned rail right-of-way (now a biking/hiking/person trail.) Without that, well..... sucks to be you in the winter if there's some sort of a distribution system problem, and it's not like ice and snow ever happen up there, right? Go ahead *******s, if you really believe your own bull**** blow that little thing up. It's not very big size-wise (neither is the town, when you get down to it, especially when it comes to permanent residents after all the "seasonal workers" go home that live in what used to be low-rent motels during the summer) but I assure you it's quite essential and that big pipe feeding it is as well.

It's absolutely true that the Yoopers don't much like others telling them what's what, and that's fine with me. But most of the Yoopers I've met, and I know a few of 'em, are well-aware of how their bread gets buttered. Outside of places like St. Ignace and Houghton you'd better have your **** together when Old Man Winter comes around; he's a bastard up there.

@Jack_crabb nails it.

What I always love about people running this sort of horse**** is that it is blatantly unconstitutional. Federalism and the Constitution are clear in this regard; interstate and/or international commerce are beyond state regulation -- end of discussion.

The very same people who argue that Michigan can force-closed Line 5 are the very same people who would argue that Ohio cannot erect a toll booth on I-75 at the north edge of Toledo and demand $500 out of every single commercial vehicle carrying car parts northbound into Michigan in a bid to force car plants into Ohio and out of Michigan.

It was in fact this very sort of differential application of same at the federal level, and at the behest of Northern States, that led in large part of the seizure of Ft. Sumpter and the Civil War.

I fully understand the other side of the issue; that of environmental concerns. But environmental concerns in this instance are a federal issue (never mind a CANADIAN, meaning INTERNATIONAL issue!) given the body of water involved which again comes back to WHY the Constitution absolutely preempts such actions by individual States. Michigan can NOT, through state action, impose a mandate on a sovereign nation; that's an absolutely-barred act at a state level.

Our refusal to demand that these boundaries be respected within the Constitution by one group (when it favors "us", whoever "us" might be in one case) is exactly why we have these problems. Trump is discovering the assraping he imposed ON HIMSELF by getting behind DeSatan's unconstitutional quarantine of people from New York and Louisiana -- and now New York is turning the tables on him and there's not **** he can do about it since he endorsed the PREVIOUS unconstitutional act.

Militia? Oh go **** your self-important bull****; you've been smoking too much of that newly-legal weed.

Speaking of which, if you're really within 10 miles of the line, how's Mackinaw Island doing these days? Governor Witless has destroyed your little Memorial Day to Labor Day means of, well, basically funding the entire ****ing economy for 50 miles in every direction up there.

Never mind that Run Mackinaw -- which spams me regularly because I've run the island before -- has now announced that they're basically done for the summer and into the early fall with the rest of the year's schedule, and they "hope" people will sign up for a "Virtual" version of their 5k. An amusing premise, actually -- you're going to pay some organization to do nothing? Uh, I sort of doubt that they'll get any registrations for THAT.

What I find even MORE hilarious is that the hotels up there for the middle of July still think their $100/nt dump (overpriced at that rate; most of them are worth $50 but not much more) is going to fetch the mid $300s. Yeah, that usually works pretty much all summer long but we'll see how that is for y'all this time around, especially given the mandates. I'm pretty sure if I was there I'd see a ****-ton of "VACANCY" signs lit up on a pretty-much every-night basis.

This much is for certain -- I have spent a **** TON of money in that part of the state over the last 30 years -- literally every year in the last 30. This year the amount I spend there will be zero, and it will be zero every further year on a forward basis until you stop acting like ****ing spoiled little ******ned brats who deserve to be bent over the table to receive a few licks with the belt.

There are PLENTY of parts of this nation where my first reaction to seeing the people there ISN'T to wish that a spare neutron bomb would magically appear at my disposal. My money will be spent there and while I'm sure you'll still have some fools that will put up with your crap I'm reasonably certain their count is insufficient to keep your fantasy island beliefs alive.

While most of the main street along with Huron is doomed the Keyhole might survive this bull****, including killing a good part of the parking so they can "seat outside" -- which works just fine until it rains, which it often does up there.

So make that maybe on survival.

Oh, and to add to it, it seems most of their staff quit since there's this thing called "rent" that has to be paid and, well, yeah, forcing a shutdown into mid-June was just lovely for them.

Yeah, good luck *******s. Meanwhile down here I'll go to the bar where I can sit at the bar and this bull**** mask-n-6' garbage doesn't exist. Oh, and our county isn't drowning in dead people either. Funny how reality trumps bull****.

What I'm wondering is if Yellowvest is a troll or just a ****ing idiot. I mean he has been here for 366 days, and apparently hasn't soaked in any knowledge from this place. That is wholly impossible unless one is trying to be stupid.

On the behalf of what I can assume is a decent percentage of the population of this place, go **** yourself, Yellowvest. You have added zero to this community with your 5 posts.
