In 1918, there were different strains of the Spanish Flu.

The WW1 soldiers that had the mildest cases remained in place to fight. The still large # of soldiers who had the most severe cases were taken out of the battle, put on trains, and sent to the hospitals, often in the cities.

That led to the worst cases being brought to the most people.

Yep @EBT.

That's what happens when you concentrate the nasties and kill the goods. You WANT the "lighter" strains to circulate because they block the evil ones. If you lock down everyone then the evil ones concentrate in the hospitals (the not-evil cases don't require hospitalization!) and you can create REALLY bad secondary "rebound" outbreaks this way.

Dear Mr Denninger,
As a long time, regular/burst reader from c.2009, with an opened copy of Leverage, I just wanted to say thank you to you for all I have learnt over the years from you, and your regular commenters.
I have been accessing the site from Australia & Denmark for years, though I am using a VPN again now.
I like to think I am bright in real life, so I regularly come here for a reality check!
Thank you for all your efforts.

All I'll add is that if you ever do a greatest hits album, my bet is that this makes the album, but won't be the lead track.

I'm still puzzled why Japan and a city like Vancouver were not hot. Environmental influence that lower R?

Or, perhaps, the vaccine was made available to the upper crust? Tin foil, or elementary my good man?

Nice work, all the same. Tip of the hat to you, sir.

Japan - Best bet is that they don't eat ****. It went through there but was lost in the noise of influenza.

Japan...

1) Clean people - some of the cleanest in the world.

2) Olympics. Now that they're canceled, I think we'll see more typical numbers coming out.

I'm seeing some interesting marketing of this "crisis".

"Shaming" is coming back. Those that work in the sweet-smelling .gov-labeled 'essential industries' are being praised as heros. Those that work in non-essentials, and are still working, are being ridiculed as dangerous spreaders.

There's a class of people who want to be recognized like the 9/11 'first (who were actually second) responders', The .med and .gov types are looking to be revered heroes for....doing what they're getting paid for.

I'm not discounting that there is danger in exposure to this; but if it was the ****ing wildfire ala Captain Trips, we'd have known this a long time ago now.

The economic damage is enormous; the kill rate of businesses will be huge. Architect client of mine laid of half of his staff today. Another quarter come next week, he thinks. Projects are getting shelved.

I expect my firm will be impacted come early next week. Planning accordingly.

We learned today that an old family friend who must now be in his late 80's or early 90's was diagnosed. I would suspect he's in a retirement home or assisted living. Will learn more tomorrow.
