This is the sort of sick crap that is sexist in the extreme, utterly indefensible and outrageous.

NikeOpens a New Window. said it was adding language to future contracts that would protect female athletes’ pay during pregnancy after the brand received backlash last week for freezing compensation for some pregnant women under endorsement deals.

Nike announced Friday the policy, which the company began implementing last year, will be written into future endorsement deals, The Wall Street Journal reported. Although current contracts will not be altered, female athletes will also receive the same protection.

What this stems from is clauses in athletic endorsement contracts that require the athlete to be competing to their level of ability in order to get paid.

Some women think this is "unfair" if they decide to have a child -- that is, they should get paid even though they voluntarily choose to do something other than compete athletically.

No man, of course, is entitled to make the same decision; he's expected to compete even though he might prefer to remain at home with his pregnant wife and, after the birth, his new child.

Nope.

By the way neither sex should be able to demand this.

You're not being paid because you're smart when you have an athletic endorsement contract.

You're being paid because you're competing in athletic competitions and showing off the company's products while doing so, essentially making the marketing argument that if you wear Nike's stuff you'll be {faster|better|etc}.

It's likely a nonsense argument in the first case (are you really faster with Nike's shoes on than someone else's?) but most marketing is in fact what is known as "puffery"; that is, it is an attempt to get you to believe, without evidence, that if you buy product "X" it will make you {faster|sexier|you'll-get-laid|whatever}.

If you sign such a deal and then choose not to perform your part of the bargain because you wish to do something else then you shouldn't get paid until and unless you do perform your part of the bargain.

This sort of rampant sexist horse**** needs to be stomped on hard and I, for one, will never buy another Nike product.

They can claim men are lesser all they want but I claim their entire company ought to be sacrificed to Pele'.

**** Nike.

I believe there will be more of this bull**** to follow. just yesterday Kamala on her knees Harris, announced the latest one upity moronic strategy, as the latest attention *****, to gain even more attention.
Harris unveils plan to fine companies that don't achieve pay equity
Quote:
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Monday unveiled her plan to close the wage gap by fining companies that fail to ensure they are paying men and women equally.

The plan seeks to change where the onus falls in the current system: Instead of requiring employees to come forward to complain about equal pay, companies would now be required to submit data on equal pay each year to comply with new standards.

What about the poor athlete that was born into a man's body, but knows he cannot compete against other men so he "identifies" as a woman. That newly minted female athlete cannot get preggers no matter how hard he tries.

Who is going to protect his right to equal pay?

I have never been a fan of Nike, at one time they did have a quality product but now it seems mostly name brand that drives their sales.

In my mind this type of payout does not different much from the police officer being put on paid leave for ****ing up on the job. Or teachers being put on paid leave for ****ing up on the job. Now Nike is literally paying females for ****ing up (Or sideways) on the job.

I guess the moral is, become a **** up!

I don't think I have ever bought a Niki product. Most of my life I either walked or jogged and for the most part I always bought New Balance or at times Brooks athletic shoes and nothing else.

Yes I saw Kamala Harris and her absurd plan to fine companies that don't have equal pay. Unreal. The basic reason women don't get equal pay, for the most part, is because if they choose to have children and a marriage then they can't devote full time to the job, they leave early for the kids or any number of things that can interfere. If they want to pass on children and maybe marriage to work the hours necessary and/or travel then fine, otherwise why should they get the same pay of they can't do the same as a man has to do?

for a long time women have inflicted their personal decisions including this very easily planned one, my former spouse's words, not mine. many of us who worked for a period of time have dealt with all of the inconvenience and accommodations that all of the other workers had to make when a woman had a child. it furthered the perception that the world revolved around her and has been going on a long time where they just dropped everything regardless of their commitments. and the worst part is that the conservative/republican fertility cult was caught supporting them to be consistent. my spouse used to do everything possible to avoid having prime fertile years women in mission critical situations.

in my business owner years and even the personal business of friends and me i can remember dealing with some female rep at a company often for a critical or costly matter and all of a sudden no return calls, emails or follow-up or other notification of why things just stopped. **** all if a little investigation did not find that bitch just went on maternity leave without any warning. the real kicker is that they played it as if the next day business would have continued. of course nothing was setup by their employers or themselves to hand off the work. it usually was ten steps backwards to get someone else to pickup the pieces and OFTEN we had to wait the requisite MONTHS until she came back to work. had female doctors decide to take the entire ****ing summers off to be with their children. sorry if i ****ing hemorrhaged in July. learned very quickly on that one.

we have spent years feeding the female ego by cutting them slack and giving special privileges born of the fact that they did at one time, probably still, need protection in terms of physicality. we kept the protection instinct and respect for the necessity for bearing life and lost the social contract that went with it.

most do not fully realize how little a man needs to earn to have a nice life. this is enhanced by the fact that we can and can learn to do so many things for ourselves into advanced age. it would astonish people how little people like me earn yet live in a major city and rather nicely outside of the various indignities of a communist ****-hole. no worries, my retreat as been in place for a long time.

i stick around as i have always wanted to see a nuclear holocaust. one can hope.

@WiFi - Regarding Kamala Harris' fines. We've all seen this movie too many times at this point. Companies will pay the fines as full compliance will be more costly. Affected companies will simply raise prices to offset added cost. Government wins (as it gets to spend the fine money)...companies break-even...Joe Sixpack takes it up the a-- again. This will essentially be an indirect tax with money flowing from us all, in the form of higher prices, directly to the government. Same thing happened with Phillip Morris, bank fines, tariffs, deficit spending, etc. It's all "hidden" taxes that we pay on top of income tax, property tax, sales tax, etc.

Harris unveils plan to fine companies that don't achieve pay equity

Setting aside arguing the absurdity of it. If such a plan were to be implemented, I'm 100% certain it wouldn't turn out they think it would.

The problem with the "equal pay for equal work" wage gap trope is that the "for equal work" part is and always has been from the very first day it was coined, a lie.

The original "study" from which the wag gap myth sprung out of, wasn't studying anything to do with income. It just happened to incidentally collect some minimum income information (annual income & gender) and incidentally included some comments on the aggregation of that data in the footnotes. Those numbers did indeed show that annual income of women was ~70% of men's annual income. But there was absolutely ZERO accounting for any other factors (hours worked, what the job was, etc), in other words, the wasn't any consideration regarding "equal work."

Since then, there have been mountains of explicit studies (by all sides, those seeking to prove the wage gap, those seeking to disprove the wage gap, and those honestly neutral to the result), <sarc>amazingly</sarc> every study that implemented any efforts whatsoever to control for "equal work" found either no wage gap existed, or if found it was so small as to be within the statistical margin of error.

As for some real life case studies, I recall some stories in the headlines a about a year or so ago about some European companies in preparation for the laws coming down the pike for them, did some deep dive audits of men/women pay and they all resulted in finding that women were being OVER paid compared to men.

I am personally highly confident that any company which does such an audit with even semi reasonable controls for the "equal work" part of the question will more likely that not find the same results.

Another anecdotal story (kind of related) that was quietly swept under the rug, a couple years ago, one of the big silicon valley tech companies (google/facebook/twitter) I'm not certain which one it was, but it was one of them, tried to implement a a completely "gender neutral" AI for screening resumes. Turns out, every which way they tried to program/train the AI to ignore gender, when screened by the AI, female resumes were overwhelmingly rejected in favor of male resumes. The project was quietly scrapped and never publicly mentioned again.

Clearly a case of "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it."
