Besides mass drivers theres so many other ideas that occur

There peaceful. They accidentally kill us all with a virus. /sneeze. Woops!

They have a ethos/religion. We arent quite buglike , they alter us to confirm to its standards. Wiping humanity out.

There pyschotic and want to torment us...just cause.

The advanced aliens of the universe think the researchers should advance their own intelligence by doing a field trial of the proposal. The aliens suggest that the researchers take a field trip at night to someplace like Compton or South side Chicago, and follow unknown laser beams pointed at them back to the laser source. The "first contact" experienced by the researchers should prove... uhmm... enlightening.

I find it astounding that many of these "scientists" never take into account our own human nature. Simply look at America. When our Europeans ancestors landed in America they eventually conquered and subjugated the existing population. These researchers have never been taught history and how it unfolded. If they did, perhaps they would more carefully consider potential downsides. Intelligence does not preclude visciousness.

Claerly the scientists proposing this haven't read "The Three Body Problem". Great hard sci-fi read, highly recommended.

Even if the aliens have FTL, that infrared laser beam is still going to take centuries to reach *them*. So it might not be that much of a disaster after all. Unless they're already buzzing around in our area in which case they already know where we are. (I read somewhere that UHF analog television broadcasts have a detection range of several light years.). It's still not a good idea.

If all you want is the habitable planet, it's EASY.

Just drop a dino killer rock on it and wait a few years. The temperature, atmosphere, free water, large moon, and molten core will all be fine.

If you are worried about humans hiding in the icecaps or something, go bigger. Drop carefully aimed rocks/comets in the sun and sterilize earth with radiation from mega flares. You'd have to wait a lot longer to colonize though, as you'd probably have to reseed even the bacteria.

maybe our intergalactic visitors will seed a virus to wipe us out clean with little to no damage to the natural environment or flora. other than a few of our nuclear reactors melting down, most areas will be fine after we rot away. pre built cities will be helpful to them. perhaps we will be useful as food and labor.

the argument that an advanced or intelligent group will be of common morality with us is quite naive. barring the concept proposed by the two iterations of the series V, or homeplanet grown intelligent barbarians originate in Russia and China.

Considering the complexities in providing the necessary environment and sustenance of organic beings in space travel, it is, I suggest, more likely that we'd encounter artificial, intelligent entities than the species which created them.

Thanks to those who made book suggestions. On the possibility of extraterrestrial invasion, if you've not already read it add to your sci-fi list Niven & Pournelle's "Footfall".

FTL travel requires that you have enough energy at hand to warp space. This my friends is not a resource constrained population. If there are FTL capable folks they are not after our oil or otherwise. They likely just don't care about us or they are yanking some of us as pets or zoo exhibits. I don't think this is a terrible risk. We've already broadcast our location.

Sure, Sancho, they will be peaceful.... but what will they think of us? Perhaps like something that best be eliminated before it can spread....

And what if they have 10,000 year lifespans? Then a 40-year slower-than-light trip might not seem so insurmountable.
