The Utter Stupidity of 'Straw Bans'
[Comments enabled]

If you've been paying attention you know that various companies, including Star****s (that just reported "earnings") have played their latest stupidity-card -- with the full cooperation of various government organs -- by banning plastic straws.

The argument is that they wind up, directly and indirectly, in the oceans -- and that's a huge problem.

It is.

However, more than half of all plastics in the ocean come from SE Asia (that includes China, of course, with which we continue to insist we should have a "free and open trade" regime.)  Poisoning and polluting is how they hold down costs there, and some of that goes into the oceans.

Nearly all of the rest comes from Africa.

Less than 5% comes from every other western nation combined.

Why?  Because western nations don't allow this sort of crap, that's why.

So why not get rid of plastic straws?

Several reasons.

First, they're less expensive (a lot) than paper.

Second, they don't turn into a soggy mess or collapse when used -- paper does.

Third, paper straws are not easily recyclable as they're contaminated after use with food (neither are plastic straws, for the same reason.)

Fourth and perhaps most-damning, some of the options being adopted -- such as "adult sippy cup" style lids, actually increase the amount of plastic used to a material degree over the former lid + straw!

So basically what we have here is a so-called "environmental" regulation that not only has no reasonable regulatory justification because the problem of ocean plastics is, nearly-exclusively, not being sourced out of the United States but in addition the "mitigation" strategies that companies are taking as a result of it will increase rather than decrease the amount of plastics used and thus having to be landfilled and otherwise processed!

Idiocy: It's what government does best.

Gourds, clay earthenware, woven baskets, and water skin s are all those SJW freaks should be allowed to use.

A wooden cask is too good for them.

And to top it off...

Even the nine year old child that came up with the 500 million plastic straws used per day is surprised his incomplete research was used.

We are very big on meaningless symbolism. Daily news updates on one girl who went missing in Iowa, but no attention at all to several dozen others who went missing the same day she did, nor any mention of hundreds who go missing every year. Great anxiety and detail about this one.

We set up a "go Fund Me" page for one child who is killed in gang violence, and it receives donations of thousands of dollars. We feel wonderful about that and pat ourselves on the back about "how much we care." Meanwhile, hundreds of other kids are killed in gang violence and we ignore them. We did our bit with the "Go Fund Me" page for the one that was on the media.

There are similar examples by the thousand. We don't care about issues and we don't want to REALLY address them. We want to feel good after having made some trivial symbolic gesture.

Straw control is not about the straw, it's about the control. Therefore it is not stupid, it is standard procedure. Calling it stupid Sir, excuses the the act by indicating that the perpetrator is not qualified to have made the rational decision. The decision was very rational. You must Submit. Remember, it's about power money, always and forever. Follow the money. Some conservative must own the major straw manufactures or importers AND the war on all things oil and oil based is a fight for control of the transport industry, one of the last outliers not a leftist domain. Oil must be destroyed for leftists to control transport.

This reminds me of a Cub Scout project that was conducted by my Pack a few years ago. For earth day, kids were told to gather as many used plastic grocery bags and recycle them to "save the environment". I ran a calculation, and if memory serves me correctly, if you recycle every single bag used in the USA for an entire year, you'll only be saving the amount of oil burned in a single day 12 hour period. So I stated, you'd be better off to tell everyone not to drive for a day, and you'd do a helluva lot more for "the environment".

Restaurant I was at the other day decided to partcipate in this crap by not providing straws unless specifically requested. Unless i want liquid all over my beard and moustache I have to use a straw to drink from the glass.

They had all that misinformation on placards on every table. Sad part is that like any propaganda people will repeat what they have read and NEVER check the facts. The pushers of this movement rely on intellectual laziness of the average American.

This is little more than deceitful environmentalist rebels without a legitimate cause working their malefactions.

Reminds me of another stupid envirofascist concept... the plastic grocery store bag ban.

In most of So Cal (it varies from municipality to municipality) plastic grocery bags have been banned, and if you don't bring your own reusable bags, you have to buy paper bags at 10c per. The justification is "environmental", of course.

This totally flies in the face of reality. Plastic bags are EXPONENTIALLY more green, and have a FAR smaller "carbon footprint" than paper bags do. Paper bags require logging, transport of logs to a timber mill, then the timber has to be broken down into pulp, and then formed into sheets of thick paper. All of this requires lots of energy, is EXTREMELY carbon intensive, and requires ****loads of fresh water to manufacture as compared to plastic bags.

After confronting an envirotool with this, I was then told that the reason for the bag ban was that the plastic bags end up in the oceans and don't biodegrade as readily as paper. Again, bull****. Right before the start of the ban, most of the grocery stores in my area had started using plastic bags made with some sort of a starch binder, that is chemically designed to biodegrade much more quickly than the old ones, ESPECIALLY in water.

In short, there is NO cogent reason why plastic grocery bags should be banned and replaced by paper bags. The whole thing is PURELY a feel good "optics" initiative.

The Chinese Maoists had a term for this, but I've forgotten what it was. Basically, you force your opponents to pretend to believe complete and utter claptrap in order to mentally destroy them.

It's the Orwellian '2+2=5' thing. And ever more commonplace in the world today.

My simple one is this: If you as a business kowtow to this, or remain in Cali****thatstateandeveryonewhoworksforahealthcareorothercompanythere then you deserve to be boycotted, your children blackballed, your relatives blackballed and consigned to live under a freeway overpass -- or get charged 5,000% more for whatever you want -- especially if you are in health care or in any way aid and abet any of these *******s directly or indirectly (like, for example, by voting for them or contributing to their political campaigns.)

That would be a good start.

there is something that must be understood to see what these ****heads are up to. we here are using logical arguments that these products are not really problematic. it is actually quite interesting that all of the plastic bags used only consume an inconsequential amount of oil.

the thing that agitates the SJW's is that they see plastic bags and straws scattered in their areas. maybe the former more, but the latter is symbolic of the problem. they see the misuse or unmindful use of these things as an issue of people's behavior. since in their world view one cannot tell people that they are slobs, including China with their contribution to world pollution, one has to limit the slobness by eliminating the products that cause this effect. the SJW mentality is a liberal one of equality and one cannot say that some people are less equal in terms of being neat. in the SJW world, they need to be protected like children from things since the plastic bag made the mess not them. seeing things as that which causes people to sin keeps them from attacking the individual which by extension protects them from being criticized.

once this becomes obvious we can see their logic in many social movements. people driving like idiots cause loss to society and a sense of lawlessness, thus cars are evil and people should not be in control of them. want to try guns? when one lives in a place like NYC it is often possible as a conservative to come to the conclusion that people are so immature and stupid that restrictions on rights and even mobility might be necessary. live with New Yorkers for a while and you will often come to the conclusion that a healthy component are subhuman and cannot be trusted to cut their own food. note that this includes a majority of white, working, family people. they raise their children to be **** like themselves. wonder why we push for schools to raise the children at earlier ages. this is the left wing response to not having social standards and not criticizing people.

a lot of responsible, cultured people find themselves on this side of the left as they see the invasion of others who realistically do ruin their communities and it is with their garbage, **** driving, manners, ethics, etc. the problem got started a long time ago when you could not criticize any behavior and it mushroomed. just had to give my neighbor a lesson on how to put out trash so that i do not have it and the plastic bags all over the frontage of my property. bags are not the problem, people are. same with cars, guns; we could go on. actually my community considers that it was ruined when a mass of people accepted as white but of a different ethnic group moved here en mass starting fifty years ago. and this community of mine is used over the decades for NYC marketing firms to predict trends for middle America. you do not have much to look forward to.

@Supertruckertom -- yes, that smell of old garbage drippings that just hangs in the air. generally things are quite dirty everywhere here and cause people to be more sloppy as a result. we handle our refuse terribly here and at great cost for poor results. love it when people pay to live in my old neighborhood for the cost of six of my houses just to enjoy the nice summer stench. rich and poor living side by side in filth.
