Is it 1984 yet?

Oh wait.... we're a bit past there....

The Department of Homeland Security wants to track the comings and going of journalists, bloggers and other “media influencers” through a database.

The DHS’s “Media Monitoring” plan, which was first reported by FedBizOpps.gov, would give the contracting company “24/7 access to a password protected, media influencer database, including journalists, editors, correspondents, social media influencers, bloggers etc.” in order to “identify any and all media coverage related to the Department of Homeland Security or a particular event.”

Naw, there's nothing wrong with this.

Trust us, this won't be abused to.... disappear someone they don't like.

Or lots of someones.

Oh, it's not just content either.  It's reach (who you reach), geographical spread, etc. -- with weekly overview "dashboards" sent via email, along with "alert" functionality.

And not just on a desktop either.  Mobile app required, with push notifications.

'Cause when they're about to kick your door in it's real important to see the latest updates "from the field."

Oh, and the deadline for completion?

Online within 5 business days of handing out the contract which means it already has been built and is operating right now, but you haven't been told one thing about this, there has been no public debate or disclosure, and someone, or a bunch of someones, already have it running and vacuuming up the data -- including the mobile component complete with push notifications.

In other words the option to stop this through peaceful political activity has already expired, the weapon has already been built, tested and is in use right now, almost-certainly by multiple parties without any disclosure or political debate.  The scope of work laid forth constitutes tens if not hundreds of man-years of effort at minimum; it is not a trivial undertaking.

Someone, or more-likely a bunch of someones, has expended millions if not tens of millions of dollars, or even more, building this weapon and they have done so in complete secrecy with foreknowledge that this "bid" would then be solicited for their work and thus they would be able to be paid for same.  It is flat-out impossible to conclude otherwise given the contents of the request and deliverable deadlines.

It is 100% certain that all of the existing "social media" platforms know about this and have already executed whatever "agreements" were necessary with the government for this weapon to be built, tested and be able to operate.

Every single one of those firms and every employee therein with knowledge of this, which have to number in the hundreds if not thousands, have remained silent during its development.  What leverage (threats) was used to keep all of said people quiet?

Congratulations folks; it's time to give up any pretense that any sort of truly independent media will be allowed to exist in America, ever again.

The NRA and other organizations, along with individuals, have for decades allowed the pretense to continue that the 2nd Amendment doesn't need to mean what it actually says.  The lie that the 2nd Amendment is mostly about hunting or even defense of one's person against a singular rapist or home invader is popular, pressed by such organizations along with politicians including Donald Trump and is factually dead wrong.  At the time the 2nd Amendment was written the founders had just finished doing the unthinkable -- taking up arms against a rogue government and driving it out, and many of them had died or been rendered penniless in the process.  The founders knew the only deterrence against this sort of event ever happening again in the future was for the people at large to individually own weapons of reasonable parity with those that an oppressing government would possess.

They won because they had themincluding rifles of military grade and a few even had the means to buy, and did, own canon.

Nobody likes facing what happened as recently as Rwanda in 1994 when "the great guardians of peace", the United States, sat back and watched as roughly 15% of the population was slaughtered like hogs in a mere 100 days.  The United States was not alone; the entire world sat back and refused to get involved despite foreknowledge months before.

Our President at the time?  Bill Clinton.

That slaughter was preceded by changes in Rwanda's gun laws 15 years earlier that made personal ownership of weapons useful to defend against such a genocide illegal -- just like what was confirmed the other day in Massachusetts.

The 1st Amendment is dead because we, all of us in America, refused for decades to insist on enforcement of the clear and unequivocal words in the 2nd Amendment.  We allowed "shall not be infringed" to be not only ignored but spat upon and burnt to ash by every single member of both major political parties.

We all sat on our asses for just a bit longer than we could get away with.
Now we're all ****ed; it's not 1984, it's 1933 -- and the boxcars are next.

Fred Thompson's line from Red October came to mind when I first read this.

"This business will get out of control! It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it!"

It's sometimes difficult for me to understand how the country where I now live (the united State) was once The United States.

The next real crisis ends any remaining illusion that I don't live within a totalitarian State.

Well at this point stopping what is to come is very unlikely. It may be time to consider what degree of losing is slightly more palatable than others. The sheep are ignorant of history and have been well conditioned with the "that can't happen here" type of arrogance that will hopefully be useful to future historians.

So what******poor options are still available? Maybe it's time to encourage your congress weasels to become a lot more aggressive with Russia and China. I'm hoping the math on that is simple enough for most people to figure without a slide rule.

My grandmother lived through that ****, including the run up to the nazis under Hitler...i have her first hand accounts of it. she's been warning for decades that it can happen here to not much avail. She is over 90 now and speaks at multiple schools about her experiences. First the registration...then checks...then confiscation under the pretence of keeping them safe for you. Her father was murdered by the bastards for not playing along... family divided up...15 year old brother sent to Russian front...just the tip of the iceberg...

I am reminded of Frank Zappa:

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater."

None of these bootlickers can tell me possessing an automatic weapon is not within my rights of self defense. I live in a southern border state with a wide open border. The federal government which has the means to protect the border, refuses to do so leaving my family wide open to get raped and pillaged by foreign invaders.

a close subset of my family did not join those of us who were here, but stayed in touch for over two centuries. they were European and felt a connection to their community and culture as we did here. after WWII they came to live here having lost all connections to their native land, refugees with culture and dignity. the long sleeves covered more than the numbers on the arms as the shirts and dresses hid the scars of the incessant torture and beatings. none of them or their neighbors would turncoat on their community or other good people. the one thing that they wished that they did collectively was to turn on the oppressors and sustain the human losses more quickly and effectively. in their words this would have stopped the tragedy and many of the other tragedies of the time in that the evil would not have been able to creep up on the communities while life seemed somewhat normal, then people holding onto normal, people wishing for the return of normal and finally forgetting what was normal.

they appreciated the states for the humanity of the people and warned to never allow the subtle encroachment of evil tyranny. in their words the leadership must fear the people as an army and seek to lead with consequences to the leadership. this and in addition they felt that leadership and the wealthy had a higher duty to serve born out of the ancient and very recent for them understanding that rulers and lords went into the battle as an obligation, a duty. lower strata people could actually earn title and maintain it by entering battle. this aristocratic duty was in place as late as WWI.

their take was that the citizen soldier of the USA was only workable if he was a lord in his own right, able to own his land outright and, or at least, lord of his wealth, in possession of weapons of his choice and never subject to the whim of a ruling class as he was given the same duty and obligations as they. the first two reject land, property tax and income tax as the first two are rightfully called rent which was what serfs paid to the lord and king. if every man is a lord with the obligations of a lord, he only pays to himself (In Anglo law property taxes are called rent outside of the USA and your land deed refers to you as a tenant in all Anglo states. If we are serfs who only rent what we use, let the ruling class fight the battles.). The weaponry they reminded us was to let any tyrant know who was really in charge.

they lived something and consequently had an innate sense to see it coming here. much like my older Russian immigrant friends figured out the coming police state in the early 1990's and what the Bush II and Obama eras meant for the country. it was familiar as they experienced it firsthand. the data tyranny that we rail against here, they were seriously warning about in the 1980's.

it is nothing new. only the tools have changed and become more efficient and brutal. it will creep up on people and once again the killing will start. no one knows the mechanism or what will be the prelude or the geopolitical events that will be concurrent, only that it is a fact. it is a fact that human nature does this and is easily distracted during times of prosperity to ignore the serious variables, align with powerful and wealth generating interests and maintain the normalcy bias until it is too late.

the armed citizenry is only a last saving device when people have the cold realization about what has crept up upon them and there is no other option. it is a get-out-of jail card, weapon of mass destruction, doomsday device that keeps any tyrant and supporting system aware of the fact that law and consequences can only govern a few of the citizens not the majority and all order is at the whim of those governed.

WHEREAS, the corporate authorities of the Village of Deerfield find that assault weapons are dangerous and unusual weapons which are commonly associated with military or antipersonnel use, capable of a rapid rate of fire, have the capacity to fire a large number of rounds due to large capacity fixed magazines or the ability to use detachable magazines, present unique dangers to law enforcement, and are easily customizable to become even more dangerous weapons of mass casualties and destruction; and....

These geniuses just destroyed their own arguments. These are not MILITARY grade or assault weapons. Like typical libards they don't even understand the differences. Of course they depend on an ignorant public to further push this down the public's throat.

BTW ever see a real weapon that wasn't "dangerous"? That's the whole premise of a weapon. If it posed no danger then no immininent threat would result. It is meant to inflict harm even through deadly force if needed.

Are weapons they claim to exist really so unusual? If they are so unusual why would they demand an entire city turn them in? Seems like they would be "quite common" to me if they insisted for a city wide confiscation.

Time to pay a visit to the self-declared dictators hiding behind the title of "corporate authorities."

Such "authority" only exist by the force of a gun. One had better damned well possess the counterargument. To hell with Illinois to start. I have little sympathy for anyone that would be anywhere near that Chicago ****-hole.

Alex, I'll take ..What the number of bullets I can buy for $1000.00 please.

Personally I think this is simply a cover to set up a gun registry. They propose something so offensive that the secondary alternative is then deemed "reasonable" when it is most certainly not.

I think you may be over-reacting to this one. This is not about tracking *people*, it's about tracking *news*. Sure, it's categorized by people, but it isn't about where someone lives, eats, works, or does for fun. If you read the statement of work, it is about what newspeople are posting on twitter, facebook, and the rest of the public internet. It's a search engine. Those have been on the web since then '90s. Just like anything, an information source can be abused. But I think this one seems pretty innocuous. And, in fact, the fact that they haven't built it yet actually leads me to presume they are doing less monitoring than I would have previously thought.

I would suppose that, prior to the internet, the agencies would probably buy newspapers and have people clip and categorize relevant articles. This is simply the equivalent idea in the Internet age.

They HAVE built it and ARE using it.

You cannot possibly build something like that, including a mobile app, in 5 days no matter how much resource you throw at the problem. The "discussions" with various data sources, some of which are either paassworded or paywalled with terms of service prohibiting that sort of scraping activity need to be held and agreements reached.

This is operational RIGHT NOW and probably in multiple places with multiple firms.

I have some background in Federal Contracting and wanted to clarify this solicitation. This is referred to as a Solicitation for Sources. Generally used by an Agency to determine if anyone can do the work. This one is only open ten days (very short), response is limited to FIVE pages (extremely short) and you have to address all of the criteria within that FIVE pages. Finally you WILL NOT receive a response if you do submit.

To respond (as Karl noted) you would have to be already doing this type of work as they specifically ask for experience on 3 similar projects.

From the FedBizOpps link in the Sun Times article, here is the complete verbige:

Solicitation Number:
RNBO-18-00041
Notice Type:

Yep -- I linked through and read the whole thing.

This isn't a "feeler" to ask "how much to build this?"

It's a request for people already doing it, complete with a requirement that you already be doing it (and prove that) and can stand it up for them in five business days.

You forget it is the victors that get to write/rewrite history. These people are already rewriting and reframing the founding of America. They rewrite and reframe the very Constitution and BoR used to found this country by failing to use the meanings of words as they existed at the time of the founding. But it is the laziness of the people and the lack of vigilance to guard those freedoms that have led to the sorry state of affairs.

In 20 years (or less) shall we be remembered as obstructionist that had to be removed in the Great Purging to enable their modern day? Most will not care as the are entertained in their VR while later going to their slave jobs where they have no freedoms. Selfishness and self-centeredness will further abound. There will be a greater and greater divide among humanity. The only good news is that such systems never can permanently sustain themselves. They are toxic to their own exisence. May their lives of those that stood by idly and those that created this sad new world truly become a daily living hell.

Freedom is slavery. Collectivism is independence. Death is life. Ignorance is strength.
