Karl--You are absolutely right, as usual. They have used all of the technological advancements in the last number of years to take away freedom and/or privacy. This is indeed very scary.

If *I* can drive a car without GPS or internet - and I was driving way before I even knew there was such a thing as GPS, and we're still not supposed to be surfing the web while driving - why can't a robot do the same? Cameras for eyeballs, mechanical arms to work the steering wheel and gearshift, mechanical legs to work the throttle, brakes, and clutch... Essentially build C3PO and program him to drive. Instant "self-driving" car without the privacy and liberty issues.

this will not be done via mandate as it gives the people something to fight. most of the things that enslave us were psychologically infiltrated into our lives. i think that it was Neil Postman contrasting Huxley and Orwell who said that Orwell feared those who would ban books, Huxley that no one would want to read them. Orwell feared the imposition of pain while Huxley the imposition of pleasure. We live in Huxley's world although Orwell's vision is significantly more amusing and primal in its effect.

the possible tyranny of robotic cars will be to the extent that more and more decision making is taken away through technology lust, easy decisions, personal validation, ease of use, comfort, perceived safety. the antecedent loss of skills whether they be hand eye motor or anticipatory or the multitude of moral and value judgements that are involved will further advance an easily led and manipulated consumer populace. add in the fact that some of the things that become irritants when driving at minimum cause a person to question the social order and at best can prompt change. the rolling TV room will negate this.

the mass market is where the profits are so they will eventually be affordable or lease-able by the current demographic. the real profits will be in them becoming marketing and market allocation vehicles as well as vehicles. the goal will be for people to not want to drive on their own anymore. this is where control grids can be set down as areas where this is up and running will attract the type of people that the local officials and marketers want to live there. actually, there are huge competing interests here which should be fun to watch. there might come a time when major interstates are locked down, excluding old-style cars, so what. often, on my trips, i endeavor to use the older pre-interstate or us-highway roads. they are just as smooth and often nicer to drive. it is funny how you have to hack the navigation programs to stop them from placing you on the major roads which shows the beginning of this soft control. i am a recent user of navigation and it does change you if you default to it. there will be a second tier of people who stay outside of this system.

the easy way to deal with the interaction of robotic cars and person driven ones will be to require a simple transponder on all vehicles that simply transmits velocity and distance. thus if a person misses a traffic control, the robotic car knows that it is coming. this would also help person drivers immensely.

people are often too stupid to realize what convenience does to them. this is why libertarian philosophy cannot be absolute. we need to look at human beings at all levels and abilities and guide the society according to a set of values. one is that pain and inconvenience are part of life and necessary for us to have the ability to create and improve the world. additionally, good to the good requires that good people be given a place and that competence is not just a requirement, but something to be protected and encouraged. we should not eliminate things or jobs for some absolute perfection. it is better for things to be purposely difficult.

if the above seems hard to wrap your head around, think of it this way. over the past two generations it has become apparent that mediocrity rules the day. very few put their best forward from students to trades to professionals. wonder why. a steady diet of observational learning from the youngest years that being highly competent does not matter. i humbly submit that i have finally figured out where the millennials lack of get-up-and-go comes from. why no one wants to be the best that he can be. why academic standards have been dropping for four generations. why our computers and technology are marginal at best. why quality suffers in new products. why quality is a surprise when it happens. why slop rules the day. people who are good are at what they do are cast off after struggling to be the best. why bother? add in the fact that most of the downsizing comes as a result of unethical business games, and?

everyday is a new revelation in how much standards have dropped and the fact that we still get to pay too much for it. every profession has seen this. i had the pleasure of seeing some of the oldest legal documents in the history of New York State, beautiful artful penmanship and command of legal language that astonished. where are we today. i had relatives who only attended school to the fifth grade whose letters and writing astonished highly educated people of today, including legitimate English scholars. one was a common laborer in the early twentieth century, the other a sweatshop worker. how do we write now with even better technology at our fingertips. ask any lawyer the state of the profession, ****.

whether by accident or design, we are creating a huge lower tier of incompetents or at least easily manipulated individuals. the new elite will be the truly rich who BTW actually educate their children in a very old-fashioned way and those of us who seek to stay outside of the temptations of the control system. i will be driving my car on the outside byways.

my Father had a good way of looking at this. When the mass of people are using some new tech in place of a skill such as math, do an appreciable percentage of them have the ability or will they acquire the ability to comprehend and create this technology. this was his safety so that something lost was replaced with more gained; usually the original skills were kept and enhanced. what appreciable number of math majors or science students could design and make a scientific calculator. answer, very few. same with the robotic cars. when people can truly build their own or really understand how they work to the point of fixing or redesigning them, i will be sold on this as an advancement.

the nerds seem to think that they can replace every profession and are trying. at what point do they have a society with no resources to purchase anything or the ability to appreciate it.

a functional culture seeks to conserve that which is good, beautiful and true. this includes human skill and ability at all levels. forget about advancing ourselves if there is no reason to be good at things anymore whether it be reading a map, driving a car, writing, preparing food, managing warehouse stock, etc.

a young person said it best to me the other day. he is not going many places anytime soon. if they have robots do it, then the robots can buy their stuff.

There are two ways to be rich: One is by acquiring much, and the other is by desiring little.
