Karl, as you note, right now banks and card companies operate on the apparent notion that their businesses are profitable enough to sustain a constant trickle-loss of fraud, much like a brick-and-mortar retailer may see shrinkage due to shoplifting.

At what point does cyber-crime theft become such a drain that this business model can't sustain? I still see homes that were repo'd years ago "sitting" in limbo while the bank presumably avoids full recognition of their loss. As you know, unoccupied houses rot in no time.

It seems to me that fraud is growing by leaps and bounds. Surely we approach an inflection point...and I say this with two of my kids employed in IT by a major credit card firm.

PS: How much would it cost to field a new law enforcement arm to go after the scam artists who phone, or who order stuff on-line for delivery?

Take it out of the traffic enforcement budget.

I've discovered a downside to freezing your credit files. I was just trying to sign up for the new Informed Delivery service with USPS. I answered the questions 3 different times to verify my identity online and USPS said they couldn't verify each time. Guess who they use to verify your identity? That's right, Equifax. smiley

I was going through some paperwork today that was set aside to deal with when I got back into town, and came across a letter I received about a month ago from a company I used to be affiliated with in real estate. It seems their data was breached, and all the personal identity could have been compromised.

Here's their solution:

"To help protect your identity, we are offering a complimentary membership in Experien IdentityWorks. This product helps detect possible misuse of your personal information and provides you with superior identity protection support focused on immediate identification and resolution of identity theft....."
