Mj71 if your budget allows in the future move from tapes to off site synchronous disk systems/arrays. It can "bit for bit duplicate" your real time onsite storage.

That being said I have been out of the tech world for five years so there may be superior systems.

Tapes have their uses. They're shelf-stable once written for much longer than a disk of any sort (spinning or SSD.)

However it has been quite a long time since they've been the "automatic" choice. 20 years ago they pretty-much were. Now.... not so much.

Tuesday we recovered our Tampa location into our DR environment and have been testing and all looks well. Although they're claiming they're waiting to make the DR declaration until Sunday I have a suspicion they'll shut down the office tomorrow and run out of the DR environment for the next several days so they're ahead of the game. I just wonder if any local employees will show up for duty. You can recover systems until you're blue in the face but if you only have a localized staff you could have a problem.

If you've been there less than two weeks you can hardly be faulted for not performing a full DR test by now...

As for tapes, ya it's old tech but you can't beat the bandwidth of and LTO-7 tape on a 757 when your dealing with sites on consumer ISPs. Latency sucks though.

Meh. Plug in disk pack, faster than LTO.

ZFS for the win.

I live on the south side of Homestead, should I leave by car or just start swimming?

Which side of US-1? East or West ?

If you're on the "Atlantic Coastal Ridge" see map at
https://s3.amazonaws.com/gs-geo-images/8....
(you can tell - it has pine trees -)
then
you won't drown in salt water

and if you're in a concrete block structure with a poured concrete tie beam
and really well attached storm shutters
you'll probably be okay.
House where my sister lived on 296th and Richard was built in 1940. Zero damage in Andrew.

Be aware if the wind blows in a door and pressurizes your house the roof will leave. So cover or beef up any double doors on upwind side .

Old timey weathermen suggested opening a window on downwind side of the house so as to make a vacuum in the house to hold the roof down.
With the shutters on you can't open it far,
but you get the idea - try to keep "Ram Effect" from subjecting house to positive pressure . You want it in compression not tension.

I left Marathon Thursday morning at 7:30 and made great time to Sarasota. Keys was a ghost town and we all running way over the speed limit. No gas available.

Only backup was on I75 for 3 miles where it goes from 3 to 2 lanes.

Since the track moved more West from several days ago, I think my house is toast.

I nailed the evacuation window.

Glad to hear you're out.

Looks like Irma has taken control of winds aloft clear up to almost Georgia.

The east coast has a better outlook this morning. The west coast has a worse one. The ONLY good news is that there's a chance Cuba gets clipped, which will take a LOT of steam out of this thing.

But.... no guarantees -- yet.

If it keep moving west, as in each forecast is just a little more west of the last one, then that may put the panhandle in play.

Not good

Naw. But the odds of Tampa getting it up the ass are materially higher than they were two days ago.

Question for construction/builer types. I am thinking the cost of plywood and lumber is going to go way up due to the demand associated with rebuilding. The reason I ask is I build dog houses for Habitat for Hounds which gives them to poor families that need a dog house for their dogs. I am thinking I should stock up on the plywood and lumber to save the charity money. What do you guys think?

Thanks guys. I just bought enough for many houses at the same prices I paid two weeks ago. Much appreciated advice.

Looks like the plywood factory in Adel at Exit 37 on I-75 could be reopened and maybe the Hebel AAC block plant next to it.
We have a felt roll roofing factory about 15 miles from me in Griffin GA.
You think they could add another shift?

Back in 2003 I used to haul liquid for them on the weekends.
My daughter, who is a Real Estate Agent in Atlanta, is already getting inquiries from people from Houston that are not going back.

Many Katrina refugees never went back to New Orleans.
Will probably be that way in Florida too.

GA DOL was in the offices until 7 PM last night getting ready for the surge in claims that will come next week. My wife got home late and missed her carpool.
She used a bus service. $5 from downtown to Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Enjoying my unplanned vacation.

Marco Island basically has the eyewall over it right now. It's likely entirely underwater, probably by 10' or more.
