Bumper to bumper traffic? Better be in a hybrid, at least it'll shut the engine down most of the time. Or on a motorcycle and **** the lanesplitting laws.

I saw reports of jams in Florida at midnight last night (I-75, Ocala area I think). It'll be worse today. Florida should probably be reversing southbound freeway lanes as early as tonight. Traffic that runs a consistent 30mph gets good mileage if you settle in.

Drifter: Dad used to barrel down gravel roads (Cagle Gulch and Union Valley) north of Chelan at crazy speeds, with a station wagon full of kids. He told Mom "I'm practicing for if we have to flee a fire". We never had to evac, but we had the Forest Service steal all the water out of our swimming pool (Camp Evergreen) a few times.

Wow, I was living in Melbourne when Hugo came by and was expected to make landfall at Canaveral as a Cat 5. I evaced to Orlando hotels 36 hours prior. I too the Bee Line (520 or 528) to Orlando. I think that it took me 3 hours to go 30 miles. That was with the toll booths closed. If people did not leave last night, then they are seriously skull****ed. I called me family in Melbourne. The have flights out of Florida on Friday to DC.

Both of the fuel stations at I 10 exit next to the Apalachicola River in NW Florida down to just Premium fuel. Girl just said it is not a rush that is hurting them. They just cannot get fuel deliveries. Their company owns many fuel stations along I 10 from my area all the way to Pensacola. My wife said OMG what if we run out of water?? "Baby! We have three deep wells on our property, two fishing ponds, and a very full swimming pool full of what??"

We left Ft Myers this morning at 5. Only on I75 for about 20 miles, traffic wasn't bad. Took 17 up to I4, no traffic until we got on I4. Staying in Orlando tonite and flying out in the morning.

This is why I love New England.

Yes, I content with liberal governments that are quite stupid and anti-freedom, but mother nature isn't going to kill me. Not with the least amount of planning.

Hurricanes? Meh.
Tornadoes? One of two every decade or so.
Blizzards? Meh. Have something to cook with and stay warm, it's a nothingburger.
Wildfires? I can't recall one in my living memory.

Very few poisonous bugs and plants, and pretty much nothing capable of eating me.

I'm fortunate enough to have arrived in Sarasota two weeks ago. The idiocy I'm seeing is mind-bending. Karl's bottled-water argument aside, those that are buying it are buying enough to support a small army for a month.

Gas is no better, and that started before the southerners started making their way up I-75. My commute takes me parallel to I-75 and I can attest that it's been a parking lot since about 10AM Wednesday.

The building I work in is locking the doors and turning off all A/C at 5pm Friday. We're now scrambling to get a data center shutdown/startup plan in place. Shame they didn't have that ahead of time.

Be safe y'all!

MJ. If your shutdown plan includes pulling all the drives, label them with permanent markers right on the drive body.

Nobody wants to be chasing serial numbers later to figure out which drive goes where.

A gallon or so per adult person per day, drinking and cooking, more if in hot environments. A Flat of 24 12oz bottles is 288 oz, or a smidge over 2 gallons.

Bottle water idiots....its all over the news like its the end of the world....

Coleman collapsible 5 gallon containers can be had for around 3 bucks if you are on the lookout... have 10 on hand, plus all our other back ups...also keep used tonic bottles with water in the freezer to fill vacant space...easy to throw in the cooler or what not and last quite long....

I thought Harvey was bad. Haven't heard a lot about what happened on the coast but in Houston as a rain event with the flooding it was devastating. If Irma keeps up and hits Miami head on the wind damage and surge are going to be insane. 2 major hurricanes in a matter of weeks and might be more coming.

As far as water we have a filter system and fill our own water bottles/ containers. Hell of a lot cheaper!

And doing heavy work in heat multiplies that heavily. Try a quart per HOUR if you are working your ass off. Or more, but you can't absorb it any faster than that, so you just dehydrate anyway.

Yep. Hiking where you have a lot of elevation increase in hot weather, well, you go through water like you wouldn't believe. Any other sort of heavy work in hot weather -- same thing.

Look at winds aloft here
https://aviationweather.gov/windtemp/plot
click 'vert level' up around 12000

I think that line of NEasterly flow that's been marching South last few days ahead of the high pressure ( over Ozarks now ) will push it offshore and it'll skirt Florida , maybe even turn out to sea and miss the whole east coast.

But i wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Latest EURO runs have moved Irma track further West. Now up the middle of Florida but I wouldn't rule out even further West as the event nears.

Excellent point, but fortunately our Data Center is on the third floor, so just power-downs. Our tape-out job should be done this evening with Iron Mountain making a visit early morning tomorrow.

You HAVE tested the restore process, right?
You DO know it works -- for every single tape -- right?

Just asking and yes, I've gotten LOTS of calls over the years from would-be clients who couldn't answer those questions in the affirmative, and they called me to try get them out of the hole they were in.

Such a rescue is rarely successful, by the way. It's usually, after much expense, "you're ****ed."
