Check your auto insurance. I have had GEICO for the last 20 years and they have always been competitive. My last renewal jumped almost $200 and last week I decided to price it out. Found American family at $300 cheaper per year with a lower deductible. F' Warren Buffett and his overpriced insurance. Moving my truck and bike to these guys.

You have to price it annually -- I do. American Family doesn't write in Florida.

But yes, do re-price insurance at least annually, both car and homeowners (or renters.) You're nuts if you don't, because this sort of game is very common.

For basic phone coverage, consider Tracfone. I pay about 90 dollars for 960 minutes added to my phone. The minutes last for 90 days, but, they will NEVER EXPIRE if you add another card inside 90 days. You can also get a one year card for higher prices. I have owned a Tracfone for 15 years. The phones are 30 dollar cheapo flip phones that last a year or two. Swapping the service to a new phone can be done online.

Tracfone disadvantages? Zero customer service. Calls go to broken english script readers overseas. They are polite but ineffective. There are online forums that can help you.

For travel we got a basic T-Mobile flip phone , the kind where you buy a thousand minutes for a hundred bucks. Averaged about 900 minutes a year so far which puts us at $8 a month.
Worked fine for five years but quit recognizing signal yesterday. This morning i called customer service, had a delightful chat with a girl in the Philippines and they're sending me a new simcard. When i told her my model i heard her type then a gasp and "Sheesh!".
So i guess its outdated just like my bell bottom jeans.
That's Great ! No self respecting spy would stoop to hacking it.

I had Mercury for the longest time and they raised their rate. Then I heard AAA was a non-profit and their quote was about $500 cheaper and switched. FYI, I also heard that Wawanesa is cheap, but haven't tried asking for a quote.

I spoke too soon...AAA car insurance just sent me a bill for the next 12 months which will be almost $1,000 higher than I paid for the previous 12 months...might have to go shopping again for cheap car insurance.

This is VERY state-specific and changes all the time -- the last couple of years Geico has been the cheapest for *me* given my operation pattern and vehicles.

Progressive was "next-best" and the others were not very close.

RE: Insurance

Another data point on insurers making up investment shortfalls by jacking policyholders: Safeco, owned by Liberty Mutual, wants 15% increase on my homeowners policy following a 16% jump last year and I've done nothing except routine maintenance in the past 7 years. And last year, to get a lower premium I increased the deductible to $2500.
