Rumor: Fedwire Hacked?

I got a rumble on this over the weekend, but now I have a second source saying the same thing, and it's important enough to report -- although I must emphasize that this is a rumor at this point.

The claim is that "someone" hacked Fedwire.

That, for those who don't follow such things, is how money clears in the wire market.  It's the central circulatory system for, well, basically everything.  This one didn't come from China, I suspect, since they'd be out of their minds to want to disrupt the circulatory system that feeds their trade engine.

Remember that recently Anonymous "declared war" on the United States over Schwartz's suicide.  If this is an opening salvo things are about to get rather interesting -- and the multiple warnings that I and a number of others have raised about the "ho-hum" approach to security that an awful lot of firms and government agencies have indulged themselves in over the last couple of decades may be coming home to roost.

Note: There is a (thus far small) pickup in the media on this.  Watch this one closely...

Hmm could this be the massive Cyberattack that the DHS has been predicting for a while now. Will it be traced to Syria or Iran?

Will it be used an excuse to push through SOPA or PIPA like legislation so that Administrations like the current one don't have to deal with informed criticism or dissent? "Rahm"bo is on record saying never let a good crisis go to waste.

I feel pretty strongly that if they enact such a law that the utility or practical protection of the first amendment may be totally eviscerated. Do that and a gun grab at the same time and it may be time to refresh the tree of liberty if you know what I mean.

Bernanke and the Fed can blame theses hackers for their dirty deeds.

Maybe the hackers can help the Fed out and add a few more zeros with money printing. The Fed keeps boasting about how it's money printing is accomplishing miracles with housing and the stock market.

'Hacked', huh?

Did the Momentum Trading Algos finally breach a firewall in the web of integrated computer systems and start manipulating what were supposed to be simple frictionless/cost neutral clearing transactions?

On January 21st, 2013 the former head of the Iranian Central Bank was caught trying to enter Germany with an undeclared $70M check drawn on the Bank Of Venezuela.
IF the Bankers cannot move funds illicitly between their fiefdoms by Courier then they are gonna have to disrupt the system to move very large sums of money and cover their tracks.
'Hacking' the FED Wire could mean that the system is no longer tracking certain types of transactions, certain amount transactions, certain routing information that would naturally be associated with certain transactions.

Short Answer: IT'S PROBABLY A HEIST.

Trades50, I'm dreaming here, but wouldn't it be something if two extra zeros were added to *everyone's* accounts? Talk about chaos.

It seems that information disclosure is one of the few force multipliers that will shift public's opinion (because it can pierce the media-induced fog and disrupt the narrative...)

One example: disclosure of questionable methods of 'reputable' climate scientists in the 'Climategate' (CRU) hacking...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climatic_R....

It's a sad commentary that such information disclosure is likely to come about only as the result of whistleblowing or illegal hacking.

If it was Anon and they wanted to send a message that could not possibly be missed, they'd change all account balances on the system to random six-digit numbers (with no decimal points). That would be not just chaos-inducing but tough to clean up, and especially so if they can get the changes pushed into archives/backups before they're caught.

A lot of people disregard Anonymous, and for the most part they're a lot of talk and only a few relatively no-damage actual efforts like leaking contact info. However, there are a lot of people that consider themselves part of Anon that can do significant to catastrophic harm if they thought they could get away with it. I suspect the only reason Anon hasn't done something like scramble bank account data is because that would cross a line in the sand - when you harm the monetary system you're declaring a hot war against pretty much all of the countries on Earth, and that's the sort of thing that will get people killed. The members of Anon who have the access and/or ability to do harm on that sort of scale know this and are not (yet) wiling to face the potential risks, but sooner or later one of them somewhere will be pushed against some sort of wall (possible scenario: an Anon-friendly IT guy or gal at a TBTF bank loses their job and goes off the reservation in response) and decide they have nothing left to lose, and things will go from interesting to terrifying in the blink of an eye.

Anonymous may be ridiculous at times with their "for the lulz" approach of malice and malevolence for their own personal amusement, but by and large, these are not stupid people. I'd wager they could be far more of a threat than they're currently willing to become.

I believe a lot of people just don't get how serious this could be....

Economy: smiley

Not saying it's that bad, it is just a rumor after all. However, if they hacked it to the point where they can screw with the money flow.... We're *****ED*

Oh **** yea.....

From Drenchs link(s)

Quote:
Last night during the Super Bowl, Anonymous hacked the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center’s Web site. There was no defacement this time around, but the group did use the Web site to upload a document containing the credentials of over 4,000 bank executives. The document contained login information, IP addresses, physical addresses and contact information.

Of course, Anonymous could have just posted some random numbers to scare people, right? ZDNet points to a Reddit thread where some members called the leaked numbers and confirmed that they are in fact the real deal. The thread also confirms that the document was up for at least eight hours, if not longer, before it was taken down.

If they can - and do - you'll find out what *****ED* is.
