Lexington Common.... NY?

Hmmmm...

Assault-rifle owners statewide are organizing a mass boycott of Gov. Cuomo’s new law mandating they register their weapons, daring officials to “come and take it away,” The Post has learned.

Gun-range owners and gun-rights advocates are encouraging hundreds of thousands of owners to defy the law, saying it’d be the largest act of civil disobedience in state history.

“I’ve heard from hundreds of people that they’re prepared to defy the law, and that number will be magnified by the thousands, by the tens of thousands, when the registration deadline comes,’’ said Brian Olesen, president of the American Shooters Supply, one of the largest gun dealers in the state.

Some folks in Albany apparently forgot how the American Revolution actually started.

The British decided they would try to learn exactly who had muskets, ball and powder -- and intended to confiscate same.  They sent a force to do exactly that, and were met by 70-odd Minutemen at Lexington Common, bearing arms.

The British ordered the Colonists to surrender their weapons.  The Colonists refused.

Nobody is quite sure who shot first, but that was the actual start of the American Revolution.

It did not start over "taxation without representation", although it can certainly be aruged that we are in that state today, where we are taxed but as citizens ignored, especially when it comes to the outrageous and blatant activity of various entities, whether it be banks or health care related firms.

No, the actual shooting started over something much more basic -- the Crown's attempt to confiscate firearms.

I've repeatedly had this conversation with a number of people both online and off.  It is simply shocking at how poor our educational system is today when it comes to matters of basic American history.  Many people believe we went to war over taxes and that was the "spark" that set off the shooting.

They're wrong.

Oh sure, taxation was a big deal -- and we're talking about taxes of a couple of percent, as opposed to the 40+% levied today when one looks at local, state and federal taxes.  Certainly this, along with many other abuses, was a factor.

But the fact remains that the actual cause of armed hostilities in 1775 was an attempt to confiscate military-style weapons from the citizens.

State officials will be nervously watching the registration figures to see how many gun owners comply, sources said.

I'd be nervous too.

After all, what comes next if the citizens refuse to comply?  There are only two options, really -- either the State backs down and repeals the law or attempts to enforce it.

The Feds and their New York counterparts had to have done some game theory on this possibility. Is this when **** finally gets real?

I really start to wonder about whether someone is really trying to start a civil war in the US.

It'll be interesting to watch how many march down to their local police departments and turn in their hardware. My guess would be about 65%. 35% would come up with excuses (sold or lost). I might be wrong. But if the rulers can pass the Patriot Act and NDAA with hardly a whimper from the prols what are the chances there will be mass defiance here? Oh, and of the 35% I'd say 20% of those are full-blown criminals in possession. They won't turn their hardware in. And that one's a given.

Third option? Say they get an estimated 10% compliance with registration. MSM won't highlight that fact. Claim victory, keep quiet and use the existing law as a way to pick off opposition as they stick their heads up. "Oh lookie, you have a weapon you didn't register..10 years!"

In other words...enforce when convenient. Ultimately, they really don't care if your average bear has weapons, as long as the average bear is still hibernating...

BTW, I was stunned to see yesterday my closest Wal-Mart just re-filled the ammunition stocks. Plenty of ammunition in all calibers, but the .223/5.56 and .22LR sold out quickly. Prices appeared to be about the same.

Having worked at DHS and FEMA as a contractor on terrorism related systems I can assure you that you are giving the feds a lot more credit than what is due, much less for NY state authorities, who are still in react mode to all these legal and political changes and whims.

The NY State reaction could easily just be Cuomo looking droolingly at 2016.

The Feds motives are much more clear, imho.

Cuomo has likely done exactly that, but this is his Waterloo and he's now ****ed himself with regard to any shot at 2016. He probably doesn't recognize it yet.... but he will.

Nice how the NY Post moved the goalposts on "assault weapons". Now anything that does not comply with the new NY law is one. Don't trust the media or the politicians that say they do not want to confiscate guns. Instapundit had a post about his article "Due Process When Everything is a Crime", but the quote from "Atlas Shrugged" was telling;

“Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against – then you’ll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We’re after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you’d better get wise to it. There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now, that’s the system, Mr. Rearden, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

It was always real, only some didnt realize how high the stakes went, and so they thought it was a game.

Assuming there was any fore-thought, it probably has some very flawed assumptions that lead to a skewed result

Noodleman,
don't expect to get any sort of real compliance numbers from the Ministry of Truth. I would have expected around 5% compliance but the approval numbers came out at around 71% for Kim Jong Cuomo in a poll that was conducted before, during and after the gun ban law "debate" so I've changed my prediction to 99% with only a handful of dangerous hardened criminals not registering their squirrel rifles and such. Don't be a 1%'er. See something, say something. Etc.
Also, got family in law enforcement locally. Says that none of the officers he works with will be making arrests for 10 round magazines. Maybe as an additional charge for somebody that really needs to be arrested, but otherwise, not so much. Which is at once both comforting and troubling, if you know what I mean and if you think you might one day become somebody's idea of someone that needs to be arrested. Or if you realize we're all just one revision of the DSM away from being classified as mentally ill.
Gen is right, wars have been started over things like this.

Did the Phoenix gun show this weekend and still trying to recoup. The ammo lines were over 2 hours long and the place was mobbed. Everyone asking big money for anything AR based. Magazines for 30 rounds averaged about $75 a piece. Lots of fools buying them. Had one guy looking for 10 round clips and asked him why? "Because the government would mandate it?". I commented if he was afraid of the govt? He said that he wanted to stay within the law and I commented that the laws are only for us and not for the crooks passing them. Why bother.............

Your family must work as cops in a one-horse town.

The cops in the cities would arrest you for looking at they cross-eyed if ordered to do so.

These are high-school educated idiots making more than general practice medical doctors and allowed to retire as early as 50.

You think they're going to put those employment terms at risk? heh. Fat chance.

Replace King George with a group of banks (including the Fed) and you have basically the same exact type of tyranny. Taxation without representation comes in the form of currency devaluation that never gets a vote, not even in the house of representatives.

I do believe it was the tyranny that led to the war. What happened at Lexington and Concord was merely the inevitable tipping point that comes when you escalate the tyranny to higher and higher levels. But Lexington and Concord were no more the cause of the war than the hammer of a gun is the cause of a bullet firing. Sure, the hammer ignites the powder, but no one ever blames the hammer. It is just the middleman in a series of events.
