Yeah, Gen, I certainly share your outrage, but I guess in NY, some animals are more equal than other animals.
As my wizened Accounting 101 prof told me years ago, "Is it right? Of course not. But does it happen? You'd better believe it!"

In 2011, 11 people in NY died from rifles which is the target of Cuomos angst. Yet, over 20 died from punches.
This does nothing but disarm honest people.

When I say in conversation that with laws containing additional penalties (for killing a cop, judge, politician, 'hate crime')... all of us ordinary individuals are treated as lesser human beings.
They rolls their eyes at best; think I'm crazy at worst.
Intent is a necessary element for crimes such as murder, of course. Motive is not, and should not, be taken into consideration for punishment (hate crime). Who the victim is should also not be taken into consideratio (should there be less penalty for killing someone with poor quality of life?)
What does it matter who was killed and why they killed them? (in terms of murder specifically, not justifiable homicide)
Not to get off subject... but I also say what does it matter why someone is driving recklessly putting others at harm (whether a horrible driver, too tired, drunk, high, etc etc).
Unless we're using Nazi style checkpoint looking for seat belts, license plate bulbs, inspection stickers, 'your papers', or drinking & driving.... there is no way to stop someone lawfully to accuse them of drunk driving unless they are swirving and/or hit something.
Our govt is so ****ed up.

Agau, your argument falls on deaf liberal ears. Obummer even said yesterday, "If one child's life can be saved..."

Unfortunately equality before the law is a quaint and outdated idea. Cops can kick the crap out of a teen in Houston, their union hires best lawyer, and they get off with warnings ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chad_Holley.... They kill an army veteran and get fined $1, and spend only 9 months in prison!!! ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Campos_....A rich guy can get drunk and drive over someone killing him, and lawyers get him off, while a poor guy gets many years behind bars for the same. Similarly, "hate crimes" get prosecuted with more vigor than the same crimes which do not fall under that category.

Typically the first responders, when they die in the line of duty, have heavy payouts for life to survivors, so those lives were already compensated for.

Quote:Yeah, Gen, I certainly share your outrage, but I guess in NY, some animals are more equal than other animals. This is sadly true everwhere. Oblabla thinks he and his kids are more important then yours. Statists always think statists are more important than the rest of the populace. And its not just guns - just look at all the states that have stiffer laws for killing a roadside construction worker than an everyday peon.

When it comes down to funding their retirement benefits versus the cost of keeping a convicted murderer behind bars guess what takes priority. It's not your safety.

Karl,
My friends from NY say that the State Const grants the bypass power to the Gov as long as approved by the Assembly or Senate...and I cannot find the language that spells this out.....can we get clarification?

http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/....Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland has said there has been an increase of people recording or taking pictures of police while making stops and is concerned that an intensifying anti-police sentiment in the community could increase negative interactions with residents.[11] ...more like he's worried of people recording their unlawful behavior

More from that article, "I hope Chief Charles McClelland recognizes that what his officers are now complaining about is a fear many of the citizens of Houston have lived with for decades," Cofield said. "And while it may be true that the vast majority of the 5,300 HPD officers do not brutalize citizens, far too many are complicit because they sit silently by with full knowledge of those who do brutalize citizens."
This person nails it. If the pigs actually want us to believe they care about abuse of power, all they have to do is 2 things: - arrest, try, and imprison a cop when he does the same thing as us mere mortals do that's against the law - **** the brothers in blue code and stop covering for your partner and friends, and if you do send that person(s)' ass to jail too
Those JBT's who now call us civilians, as if they are part of the army or marines, it makes my blood boil.

Recently (a few years) the state was looking to legislation capital punishment ONLY for killing cops. I thought it was abhorrent and glad it didn't pass and agree completely with Karl. The idea that one should receive MORE punishment for killing person A over person B is vile and ghastly.
BTW, I visit another forum often and I've never seen such angst by some about the NY state gun law they've just passed. Even people who are dead-cool all the time were clearly upset, and one saying he's now a Republican in NY.

Why do they call the people who show up after you call 911 "first responders".
Having cut people out of cars and began first aid I've become used to the idea that when the professionals show up I'll be asked to step aside and not spoken too again, so that idea of who is really "first" has always annoyed me.

The link from Joyce wrote.."We can't pit the community, and especially the minority community, against the police," the chief said. That is hilarious. Does this guy think he is a comedian? The pigs have been against the minority community for decades. Are not pigs in the public eye? Why do they think they should be exempt from filming during the natural course of their duties? **** them.

What happened in New York is something very ominous indeed...a backroom deal that takes the second amendment from New Yorkers (police excepted of course).
Bloomberg, Cumo...traitors. This must not be forgotten.

@Thetemplateblog: How do you think His Lordship Cuomo screwed himself? This is after all NY. I still see MD's asswipe gov. trying to outflank Cuomo on his left over gun control. But that won't hurt him in MD, just like what Cuomo did probablay won't hrt him in NY. How many Rethuglicans voted for this POS bill?

Yeah that NY gun law was pretty much like government got out of the wrong side of the bed and decided to abuse their citizens. I think the reason they made it so draconian and rushed it, was to front run Obama's executive orders and since the NY gun laws was such an outrage, the focus of rage would be on NY and not on Obama.
So NY citizens can probably thank Obama for the asinine laws.

"The legislation would also include the "Webster provision," a mandatory life-without-parole sentence for anyone found to have killed a first responder. The provision is a reference to the Christmas Eve shooting in the Monroe County town, where two firefighters were shot and killed."
Come on, Karl. For they are designated the "King's Men" after all. They get paid like medical doctors and are allowed to retire as early as 50 and are often even immune from the laws that the rest of us must follow to the letter.
So why wouldn't there be enhanced penalties for killing one?
If my neighbor's house caught on fire and I ran over to help put it out...and in the process some sniper took a pot shot and wasted me - I would expect the shooter to be out of jail and a free man in 7 years or less. For I am not one of the "King's Men". I know my place. We must all know our places in society.
