Claims: +335k, Do You Believe In Magic?

I have trouble believing this, but it is what it is....

In the week ending January 12, the advance figure for  seasonally adjusted initial claims was 335,000, a decrease of 37,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 372,000. The 4-week moving average was 359,250, a decrease of 6,750 from the previous week's revised average of 366,000.

....

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 555,708 in the week ending January 12, an increase of 2,360 from the previous week. There were 525,422 initial claims in the comparable week in 2012.

smiley

So what we have here is on an annual (that is, like-vs-like week -- no adjustment required) increase of about 30,000.  But the Department of Lies reports a 37,000 claim decrease predicated on alleged "seasonal adjustment", despite the fact that the raw figures were up 2,360.

smiley

Let's look at the big table.

Holy crap!  +465,547?!

In GovWorld, once you apply "seasonally adjusted" to something, it is license to lie and say whatever the **** you want.

It's all about perception. People want to believe we have recovered. I keep hearing it from the Obama supporters.

"If things were not getting better the stock market wouldn't be so high."

As we know the media keeps stating this. And how raising the debt limit will ensure that the economy will get better.

The Republicans will fold on raising the debt. Guess we extend and pretend a couple more years.

They play the game until it blows up, however long that takes.

Not a peep from the rating agencies.

Last year sa/nsa was 364,000/525,422 = 69.27 %
This year sa/nsa is 335,000/555,708 = 60.28 %

I also smell a rat there...

So none of you guys think that previous economic reports may have been underestimated to get "Bernanke the academic" to do QE4? I wish I knew who, what, where was swindling who, what, where. Let's set a goal of 6.5 unemployment; but we also need 1 million H1Bs and a few million border crossers. Sounds like harmonious goals!

thanks Gen - it would be great if the most transparent administration in our history (joke) would explain the rationale for dramatically changing the seasonal adjustment

We know the criminals on Wall Street can't be this stupid, so their machines were geared to spread the lies. This administration can't tell the truth and doesn't mind their cronies running games as well. When the tide goes out we will see a lot of naked bodies.

My 21 year old son took a job with an "employment agency" that outsourced him as an apprentice electrician to a EMV manufacturing plant installing diesel generators and AC electrical systems in large fire trucks. He was told he'd work for 90 days before becoming a permanant employee of the EMV company. He was limited to putting in 70 hour weeks which he did regularily. My intuition from the very beginning told me this wasn't going to end well but I supported his move. Then he began to relate the turnover at the plant to me. I knew he was screwed. Last Friday he was "laid off" exactly one week before he had his 90 days in. No benefits, no severance, no unemployment.

I've gotten to meet a lot of blue collar workers my son's age and it's down right depressing. There's a ton of younger people working as contract and temp employees on an intermittent basis under harsh conditions for just above minimum wage.

IMHO even Gen is undershooting the real unemployment/underemployment numbers.

At least Jr has his electrical apprecntice card. Sounds like his next stop is the North Dakota oil fields which I dread. My neighbor works up there 14 days on and 7 days off and sounds like hell.

Tell that to the widow 2 blocks west of me whose husband was killed by an uninspected boiler that exploded killing him instantly. Left her and 2 kids 10 and 12 years old. She'd trade the insurance money to have him back in an instant.

Neighbor won't go into Williston unarmed or unescorted.

Yes, Gen, the pay is good but still isn't enough.

I'm sure I'll have plenty more to report on ND down the road.

**** that's been happening to wives since men first started getting married. Sad, tragic, but society marches on. :-/

Bet she enjoyed the paycheck prior, though... And is one of the reasons I'm uber paranoid around large machinery. My own father nearly brained me with a backhoe this week loading his screw extruder into long-term storage. Ugh.

Ihsmta - the same thing has been happening to the son of a friend of mine. The kid (23) gets a "job" thru a temp agency as a temp-to-permanent situation, works for either 58 or 88 of the promised 60 or 90 days, then gets laid off. His dad at first gave him hell for screwing up and not getting the permanent position, then realized there was a pattern to it.

Minimum wage, no benefits employment.

UPS and many others have been doing this for decades. My first company laid off our production staff (software shipping) every ten months for two months. It was cheaper to pay the UE than it was to pay bennies. They always hired 'em back on the first of the year.

I used to be a recruiter for a staffing agency. Your son can probably claim UE from the staffing agency if they fail to find him another assignment. He is an employee of that company and every week he should contact them, ask for work, and let them know he is ready, willing, and able to work. That was a secret that the staffing agency told us but of course didn't want our temps to know about.

Yep, that time of year where NSA claims are adjusted downward to a laughable degree.

Claims can go as high or low as they want because there will always be someone filing for unemployment. It doesn't mean squat unless jobs added significantly outpace UE claims and considering how loose the guidelines are for being employed as well as the fact that many jobs are temporary, low hour, low wage jobs, even the number of jobs added is next to meaningless.

Good luck to your son, Ihsmta. These are crappy times to be entering the workforce.
